I know this is not a Houston site or even C-USA, but this is some big news and is from a non-BCS team. Houston just lost recording setting quarterback Case Keenum with a torn ACL and their backup quarterback Cotton Turner to a broken clavicle. Both players are lost for the season. Side note, Cotton Turner is the coolest name to play quarterback in Texas; yes much better then Colt McCoy.
Head coach Kevin Sumlin is in real bind and feels for the two players:
"I am very disappointed for both these young men," said Sumlin. "It's hard to see them hurting right now. They both are a big part of this team and wanted to be contributors to its success this season. I think they can still do that with their off-the-field leadership."
Perusing the Houston depth chart the replacement looks to be Austin Elrod since he has seen time. Last year he played in three games and has the leg up on the other quarterbacks. However, do not be surprised if Kevin Sumlin turns to highly rated true freshman Terrance Brodway. Here is his bio on the official Houston Cougar website:
Rivals.com 4-star quarterback at Capitol High... rated the fifth-best dual threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com... 11th best player in Louisiana by Rivals.com... ranked as No. 60 athlete in the nation by ESPN... named First-Team All-State quarterback and First-Team All-District... Offense-Defense All-American Bowl participant... led his team to state championship game... was 135-of-221 for 2,140 yards with 20 touchdowns... First-Team All State quarterback by New Orleans Times-Picayune and Baton Rouge Morning Advocate.
Besides those two, Houston has seven quarterbacks on the roster so there will be plenty to choose from. However, losing Keenum who was a passing machine and has 12,950 passing yards entering this season. Houston's chances for a C-USA title are probably shot for them this season. Outside of maybe Oregon a few years ago I can not recall the last time a team lost their top two quarterbacks to injury this early in the season.
