Mountain West Football Week Eight What What We Learned: BYU Might Make A Bowl Game

Air Force

The Falcons really could have used FB Jared Tew, who is out with a broken leg, but even he may not have been able to make the game against TCU any closer. Air Force was held to only 184 yards which was their season low this year. This just shows how good TCU is by being able to slow down the Falcon triple option. The Falcon defense gave up 277 yards on the ground which was their fifth game where they allowed 200 plus yards on the ground.

BYU

The Cougars probably should have blown out Wyoming with their early 16-0 lead, but then youth and inexperienced took over and allowed Wyoming to come from behind and almost beat BYU. BYU's defense was the reason they won this game as they stopped everything Wyoming tried to do. BYU needs to beat Colorado State, New Mexico, and UNLV to make a bowl game. I could see them winning all three or losing two of three, because they are not going to lose to New Mexico.

Colorado State

The Rams started off good and was keeping the game close down only 17-6, but Utah took off in the late second and third to run the Rams off of the field. Pete Thomas was not completely terrible against a good Utah defense as Thomas went 19-for-28 and 185 yards. Chris Nwoke was the star for the Rams as he ran for 48 yards and then had eight catches for 49 yards, and he is a freshman which gives the Rams hope for the upcoming years.

New Mexico

The Lobos hung around with San Diego State by losing only by ten points, so technically that may count as a win for New Mexico. The Lobos were partially aided by the fact that Aztec running back Ronnie Hillman left the game with a minor hip injury, and the Lobos were able to hold the Aztec passing game under 300 yards. QB B.R. Holbrook was back for the Lobos, but he threw for under 50 percent and was yanked for Brad Gruner.

San Diego State

Most were expecting the Aztecs to blowout the Lobos, but a win by San Diego State is something they have not experienced the past few years. Turnovers was an issue in this game by having a pick and a fumble which slowed down a couple of drives. Also as I mentioned above, RB Ronnie Hillman left the game in the second quarter with a hip pointer. A win is a win, and San Diego State is one win away from being bowl eligible.

TCU

The Horned Frogs allowed their first touchdown in the past three games against Air Force, but it was the only score that the Falcons would get that night. TCU's defense is very good by holding the vaunted Falcon rushing attack to under 200 yards which was their lowest output of the year. The rushing attack was lead by TCU's Ed Wesley who had 209 yards and two score. TCU can beat teams with either the running or passing game.

UNLV

The Rebels needed the off week after getting knocked around by Colorado State. The Rebels should have a good shot at a win next week when they take on New Mexico.

Utah

Another onside kick? I guess leading only 14-3 was not enough, as Kyle Whittingham called for the onside kick which they recovered and score a field goal. Utah had its normal first quarter warmup and then exploded for points in the second and third quarter. Utah did have only one turnover which is an improvement over past games, and they were even in this game but for the season the Utes are minus six on the turnover margin.

Wyoming

The Pokes had a chance at the end of the game to beat BYU on the road. The first quarter is where Wyoming failed themselves as they were down 16-0, and then outscored BYU 20 to 9 the rest of the way. Wyoming needs to improve their rush defense since they gave up over 200 yards on the ground. Specifically, the Cowboys need to shore up the rushing attack when they play San Diego State. Wyoming needs to win their last four games to become bowl eligible against Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, and San Diego State. Three of the four are good bets for Wyoming to win, so it will come down to San Diego State again. Last year, Wyoming used a big fourth quarter comeback to knock the Aztecs out of bowl eligibility which then in turn allowed Wyoming to go to a bowl game.
