The current team is well on its way to rivaling the ignominy of the 2007 edition, having already dropped games against a I-AA paycheck, a token MAC-rifice and the two most beatable Big Ten peers on the schedule. In between, the annual rivalry match with Wisconsin was another blowout, dropping Brewster to 0-9 against the Badgers and the other most-hated foes, Iowa and Michigan.
The Daily Gopher put together an exhaustive list of over 30 candidates where some are realistic and some are a real stretch. The list includes five current Mountain West coaches:
The Mountain West Group (5)
Troy Calhoun - (HC at Air Force) - has done a lot with huge challenges at UAF
Chris Peterson - (HC at Boise State) - highly unlikely but we are a BCS school
Kyle Whititngham - (HC at Utah) - even less likely since Utah is moving to Pac10
Gary Patterson - (HC at TCU) - not likely supposedly turned us down in 2007
Bronco Mendenhall - (HC at BYU) - successful, has beat BCS programs
The real name to keep an eye out for is TCU's Gary Patterson who turned down the Gophers back in 2007. He will be contacted again as will other top non-BCS coaches. My prediction as many others will probably agree with me that Patterson is not going to Minnesota.
