Conference play kicks off with a good game tonight with a pair of conference heavy weights. If not for an inexcusable loss to Oral Roberts New Mexico would be undefeated and possibly in the top 10. This early season matchup could decide the conference title, because New Mexico has emerged as the team to beat along side UNLV and BYU with San Diego State just behind.
One thing to expect is a lot of points as both teams average in the 70's so it should come down to who can make a stop when the game ends. Accuscore predicts a near tie with 71.6 to 71.2 in favor of New Mexico with a 52.1 percent in favor of the Lobos.

Picked to finish fifth last year in the MWC, the Lobos surprised more than a few people when they tied both BYU and Utah for the regular-season title. This year it is the same story for UNM, expected to finish fifth in the nine-team league, but already this squad is off to a remarkable start with 14 wins in 15 chances.
Meanwhile, San Diego State has matched its best start to a campaign in the last quarter century with an 11-3 mark and has posted 12 straight wins at home dating back to last season. The Aztecs have won nine of the last 10 games overall, the most recent of those coming in an easy 89-54 final versus Pomona- Pitzer on New year's Eve.
