Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #6 2006 BYU Cougars

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number sixth spot.

# 6 2006 BYU Cougars (11-2)

This was the team that started the resurgence of BYU football after the dark Gary Crowton years.  That year the Cougs lost two games to Arizona and Boston College on the road by a combined ten points.  This year also will be remembered for the Utah win on a last second play that featured the line "Harline is Still Open."

This BYU team featured the offensive player of the year in John Beck and a total of five players on the first team and two more on the second team.  Also, Bronco Mendenhall was named the Mountain West 2006 coach of the year.  Per typical BYU teams they were near the top nationally in the  major offensive categories. Not be out done was their defense which was actually one of the better defenses BYU had, and they were ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense.

They ended the season on a 10 game winning streak that ended with a big 38-8 win over Oregon which would end up being their first of five straight Las Vegas Bowls.  That year BYU ended up finishing 15th and 16th in both major polls, and that was the year that propelled BYU back to their place a top the national rankings where they belong.
