Counting Down the Mountain West 2000's Decade Greatest Players: #5 Max Hall QB BYU

The countdown of the top 10 list of players of the decade started out with the honorable mention list and now we are moving to the fifth the best player of the past decade.

#5 Max Hall QB BYU (2006-2009)

  • All-MWC First team (2007)
  • All-MWC Second team (2008-2009)
  • School record in wins for a quarterback (32 wins)
  • Second in school history in total passing yards, total offense, and passing touchdowns

The awards are not there for Max Hall, but he is one of the best quarterbacks in the great line of quarterbacks in BYU's great history.  Quarterbacks include Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Steve Young, Steve Sarkisian, Gifford Neilson, John Beck, Jim McMahon, and I am leaving others off.

Hall has the most wins as a quarterback in school's history as well as in in the short Mountain West history.  The only downside to Hall was that he failed to make it to a BCS game while rival Utah made an undefeated 2008 season, but the Utes did not have a better three year stretch in terms of conference titles where BYU had two and Utah only the one.

However, for the records and success Max Hall will forever be linked to his quotes after their win over Utah in 2009:

"They didn’t deserve it. It was our turn, and our turn to win. We deserved it. We played as hard as we could tonight. And it felt really good, again, to send them home, to get them out of here, and so it is a game I will always remember.
I think the whole university, their fans and their organization is classless. They threw beer on my family and stuff last year, and they did a whole bunch of nasty things, and I don’t respect them, and they deserved to lose."
