The Utes seem to have finally found some consistency. The have won their last three games by an average of 14.6 points per game, including a big road win over LSU. The timing of their run couldn't be more perfect. They will be put to the test this week as they enter a very difficult stretch of MWC play.
The Utes open this tough stretch on the road against New Mexico tonight. Following this game the Utes will play at UNLV and face San Diego State at home. A win tonight could be a huge statement for the up and down Utes.
New Mexico is very good with wins over Cal, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Dayton. They were highly ranked after a 12-0 start to the season. Since that great start however, New Mexico has lost 3 of their last 5 games. They were looking to dominate MWC play, but are off to an (0-2) record in conference play.
This game is very important for New Mexico, not just Utah. Falling more games out of first place in the MWC would be very bad. The conference is fairly strong this season, and would be hard to make up ground if they continue to drop in the conference standings.
The game will be played in the Pit, where New Mexico is one of the best teams in the country. They are beatable though. Last Saturday, UNLV beat New Mexico by 14 points in the Pit. Coming into the game, New Mexico clearly is the favorite and has the advantage.
