Freshman Kawhi Leonard took the game into his own hands for the second straight game as he lead the Aztecs with 13 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double. After quietly racking up rebounds in the beginning of the season, Kawhi is quickly establishing himself as a team leader. The only other Aztec in double figures was Junior guard DJ Gay with 12 who added 2 assists and 2 steals.
San Diego State snapped a seven-game losing to Arizona and the first time since 1983. The Aztecs also defeated the Wildcats for only the sixth time in 21 games.Forward Derrick Williams led the Wildcats with 13 points and 9 rebounds. San Diego State continued the trends of playing a great team game but still made a lot of mistakes. Although the Aztecs had 18 turnovers and only 8 assists, they picked up 10 steals and a whopping 10 blocks. They were the bigger and more physical team tonight, but only attempted 9 free throws, making 5 of them. 55.6% of free throws made is a huge improvement over the last game but they still need to pick it up in that category.The Aztecs led wire to wire in back to back games,
Fortunately, the areas where the Aztecs excel allowed them the breeze past the Wildcats. They shot 48.2% from the field, out-rebounded the Wildcats by 14 (36-22), and cleaned the offensive glass. San Diego State also continued great offensive play; in addition to limiting Arizona to only 36% from the field, four players picked up multiple blocks and 3 more had multiple steals. San Diego State held Arizona to its lowest point total since scoring 41 on March 15, 1985 against Alabama. It was the Wildcats fewest point total in 801 games.
Tyrone Shelley had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks, Billy White had 7 points and 2 blocks, Malcom Thomas had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 blocks, and an assist. Chase Tapley had 2 blocks off the bench and Kelvin Davis picked up 7 points off the bench as well.
