Early Recruiting: BYU Cougars

The dread of offseason leaves topics slim, so why not get into some early 2010 recruiting. We will look into who has made verbal commits and players who are interested in the school.

These are the six who have verbally committed, so far and their top recruit is Bronson Kaufusi who is from just down the street from BYU in Provo.

Jordan Black OL 6-7 245lbs Sandy, UT

Algrenon Brown RB 6-1 210lbs Salt Lake City, UT

Bronson Kaufusi DE 6-6 226lbs Provo, UT

Joey Owens LB 6-3 215lbs Pleasant Grove, UT

Graham Rowley DT 6-4 265lbs Waialua, HI

Travis Tuiloma DT 6-3 290lbs Topeka, KS

BYU's tactic in the recent years have been to go after sophomores and younger players to show that the school is serious. By doing that the high school athletes are more likely to sign with BYU since they were most likely the first school that went out and recruited them.

The need for BYU in the 2010 recruiting class is going to be finding quality players in the secondary, replacing the linebacking corp, and beefing up its offensive line. BYU always gets at least one quarterback and this year there is a top recruit Jake Heaps who is on BYU's short list.

Getting Heaps would help BYU continue the tradition of great quarterbacks playing in Provo, the other schools that are in the chase are Washington, California, LSU, and Tennessee.

Heaps recently attended a NIKE Training Camp and improved greatly from his previous camp, and Heaps said he expects to make a decision in mid June.
