There have been a few big stories regarding the MWC most notably with BYU cancelling their spring game and TCU's Marcus Jackson getting moved around from quarterback to safety, and back again.
There is scheduling news which affects Wyoming who now will play Florida Atlantic instead of Bowling Green on October 3rd. The reasoning behind this is because of a scheduling snafu by the MAC where Miami (OH) was to play Colorado, but they cancelled the game, which put them at 13 games, an obvious no-no. That lead to Toledo to be playing at Colorado to replace Miami (OH) in Bolder.
The scheduling affected many teams with Colorado, Boise State, and Wyoming getting new opponents. At least none of the schools had to change the game from a home to a road game.
Other big news is that Utah coach Kyle Whittingham narrowed the quarterback competition to down to two players with Corbin Louks and Terrance Cain. True freshman Jordan Wynn who is in spring camp still needs to add weight and is getting a few reps, but he will redshirt in order to bulk up and learn the offense. Finally, DeVonte Christopher who was in the mix to play quarterback will now move to wide receiver. Last year the team wanted Christopher to try wide out but refused, but with his athletic ability he needs to be on the field. In addition to moving to wide receiver Christopher will still be at quarterback, but will play the role similar to what Corbin Louks did last year as a change of pace back.
Other spring news is that 2008 starting linebacker Ricky Brewer has been suspended for the 2009 season because of violation of team rules. Brewer was second on the team in tackles last season with 103 and third in 2007 with 64, but with this suspension he will lose a year of eligibility.
"It’s unfortunate, but we need to accept the consequences," CSU coach Steve Fairchild said. "He’ll still be a part of our program on a daily basis in 2009. I look at it not as what he did, but what he does with the situation from this point on. We’re looking forward to getting him back in uniform for what we hope is an outstanding senior year."
The only incident for Brewer was a 2008 alcohol incident, he also pleaded guilty in September 2008 to not having his driver's license in his possession. However, there have been no records of him in any local jail the past four years.
Transfer news is coming out from Wyoming which makes coach Dave Christensen breath easier at night is that quarterback Chris Stutzriem, who started the last four games for the Cowboys last season is transferring. He is looking to transfer to an FCS of NCAA Division II school near his home of Lawton, Oklahoma so he can play without the NCAA year waiting period. This leaves two quarterbacks on the roster to run Christensen's spread with junior Dax Crum who started five games and senior Karsten Sween who started three games.
