Spring Football Preview: New Mexico

Spring practice starts: March 23

Spring game: April 18

Three things to watch

  1. Former Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Locksley takes over from Rocky Long who was at New Mexico for a very long time as a player and then a successful coach. His offense has a steep curve and without QB Donovan Porterie participating in spring drills and the loss of other top talent the new players need to learn quickly.
  2. Quarterback Donovan Porterie, who tore his ACL back in September, is not expected to participate fully in spring drills. Brad Gruner who replaced Porterie in the fall was so-so and will have to battle Emmanuel Yeager for a spot in the two-deep this spring.
  3. Teams around the MWC can rejoice that the 3-3-5 is dead at New Mexico. New defensive coordinator Doug Mallory, formerly of LSU will now lead a similar defense in Baton Rogue. Besides learning a new defense is that the Lobos lost seven players off of last years defense that was fourth in the league
