Week 2 Preview

Here we go again, San Diego State starts their season and the conference has two huge games this week.

The last time these two team played in 2003 Colorado State beat the Golden Bears 23-21. This Rams welcomed 10th ranked Cal who is coming off an impressive win over Tennessee 45-31. Colorado State better not kick to DeSean Jackson who had an amazing return against Tennesee and he is just an overall playmaker. Also the Rams must slow down the running game which ran for over 230 yards and was lead by Justin Forrest who had 156 yards and averaged 6 yards per carry. The Rams need to start just like they did week against Coloardo completing a high percentage of passes. Also Kyle Bell needs to have another big game and so does Caleb Hanie who has some good recievers in Kory Sperry and also the coolest name in football in Johnny Walker. This game is another chance for the conference to show how good they can stack up against top opponents. I do not think CSU has the defense to keep pace with the Golden Bears, but by the way Cal played against Tennessee I can see the Rams putting up some points. In the end it will be Cal over Colorado State.

This game should propel the Cowboys to 2-0 heading into a showdown in Boise next Saturday. The Aggie team is in the bottom 15 of all teams in college football, so do not expect much from this team. The only hope for the Aggies is if Kevin Robinson returns multiple kicks for scores or gives the Ags excellent field position, but the offense is terrible even with Senior Leon Jackson III. Look for Karsten Sweed to pick apart this defense by throwing for a ton of yards this week and for RB Devin Moore have at least 110 running the ball.

This looks to be one of the more interesting games of the week. BYU fans are upset about Ben Olson who went to BYU before his church mission and then transferred near his home town, so fans are all up in arms and want the Cougars to crush them. Both teams looked impressive last week with BYU beating Arizona and UCLA beating Stanford. For BYU to win they must throw the deep ball more often instead of throwing the 5 - 8 yard routes, very effective but to beat the Bruins the offense needs to resemble more of last years deep ball. We will really see how good this BYU defense is, because last week the Bruins threw for 286 yards and 5 TD's and also ran for 195 yards with Kahlil Bell. The Bruins did what they wanted against the Cardinal, but BYU's defense is much better then Stanford. Now for the prediction I fell this game will be close within 10 points I feel UCLA will come out on top, because UCLA has the experience at QB and it's at home.

Rice-Eccles Stadium 4PM MT TV: The Mtn.

Truth time for the Utes with Tommy Grady getting his first career start and it comes against an Air Force team with a new regime and the Utes have only one game tape to look at the offense. Everyone knows the Utes story losing RB Matt Asiata and Brian Johnson, so it is up to offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig to devise a plan that can have a successful running game and help out Grady to succeed. The Utes must use their talented receivers in this game, by doing short slant routes to start getting yards to get the defense to slide up on the line, and hopefully get some type of running game going with Ray Stowers or Darryl Poston. As for the Falcons they are actually passing the ball, and they have the QB to do with in Shaun Carney who can throw, but the Air Force option is still in play. Just look at last week when they ran for over 200 yards, yes it was agaisnt South Carolina State but it is still 200 yards. As for this game I would have said easy victory for the Utes, but with the injuries this game will be closer then normal but that is nothing new between these teams. I will go out and say the Utes will win this game and it will be by less then 7 points.

Here is the showdown of the week, it is just too bad it is not on ABC for the Saturday night game. Texas agaisnt Arkansas State almost pulled a Michigan and lost to a Sun Belt team. As for TCU they may be without the services of All Amerian defensive end Tommy Blake and also perhaps without tail back Aaron Brown who inured his knee against Baylor. This will be another test game for the MWC, but in this case it will be two ranked teams going at it. Texas has the experience with Colt McCoy at the QB while TCU is using redshirt freshman Andy Dalton. This game is difficult to call here Texas played terrible against an inferiror opponent and could have lost, becasue that penalty agaisnt Arkansas State should have never happened when the recovered the onside kick. I think TCU will be able to hang with their defense with or without Blake in the lineup, but if Aaron Brown is out that will hurt an all ready average offense. I would love for the Horned Frogs to shock the Longhorns, but in the end TCU will not have enough offense to win.

Wisconsin travels to the desert of Vegas to visit the Rebels. Wisconsin comes in with a top 10 ranking and Big 10 and National title hopes as well. For Wisconsin Lance Smith-Williams can only play for home games so this puts a small kink in the Wisconsin offense. This game should not be close at all, UNLV played decent against Utah State but this is a top 10 opponent and with Travis Dixon still starting I dont see the Rebels being able to hang in this game. This game has Wisconsin winning in a blow out.

University Stadium 7:30PM MT TV: The Mtn.

The instate rival brings us high powered passing offense in New Mexico State and against the New Mexico Lobos this weekend at the University of New Mexico. New Mexico State has one of the most explosive offenses in the country that is lead by the best Junior QB in Chase Holbrook threw for 288 and 4 scores last week in the opener. New Mexico does have a good defense holding UTEP to 10 points and less then 100 yards. So something has to give in this game in this game for the New Mexico State offense. For New Mexico Rodney Ferguson ran all over UTEP but could not find his way into the endzone. New Mexico State is not the best agaisnt the run by allowing 163 against SE Louisiana, so Ferguson should get his yards. The key for New Mexico is to get the ball in the endzone and try to limit scores by Holbrook he will get his yards but limit the scores is the key. Looking at New Mexico's game last week scoring no touchdowns in the loss I think New Mexico State has the edge because they can score, but look for New Mexico to rebound.

There you have it multiple ranked teams playin MWC foes I think the conference will win one of these games agaisnt a ranked opponent.
