Mountain West Still Waiting To Hear From BCS About Access For 2012, 2013 Seasons

Back on Dec. 12 the Mountain West submitted their petition to join the BCS for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, but fast forward four months later there is no decision and no vote has take place on the matter. The 11 representatives are to come from each conference and one from Notre Dame were to meet in January but that never happened.

Apparently BCS executive director Bill Hancock said that there is no hurry to make a decision:

"Don't really have any news; no decision has been made," Hancock said in an email. He noted the Presidential Oversight Committee would make the final decision, but that there's, "no rush."

A similar response was given by Hancock in February:

... the BCS will continue to try to get the Presidential Oversight Committee together on a conference call, but Hancock said there is no immediate deadline when the committee would vote and one may not be conducted until the start of the season, in late August or early September.

One would think that the bowls and other conferences would like to know before the season begins about how many at-large spots are going to be open.

College Football Playoffs: Time To Mock The 'Rose Bowl Plan'

It is hard to believe that a plan could be more controversial than the proposed Rose Bowl plan over the current BCS, but they have succeeded. Besides the obvious that this only benefits the Big Ten and Pac-12 and no one else. First here is how the last five college football post seasons would have looked if this plan was in place.

OK, now that you are back here are some hilarious tweets from those around college football making fun of this idea. All of these were compiled by Holly Anderson over at Sports Illustrated, and they begin after the jump.

College Football Playoffs: Rose Bowl Wants To Retain Big 10, Pac-12 Matchup

There will be some important people making decisions that will change college football forever, and hopefully for better with some sort of playoff. The three ideas gaining steam are a four-team playoff with the four best or highest ranked teams, a four-team playoff with the four highest ranked conference champions or a plus-one after the bowl games with the two highest rated teams.

Now there is a new wrinkle where the Rose Bowl wants to keep their traditional tie-in with the Big 10 and Pac-12, but I don't think it will make everyone happy.

An excerpt from the USA Today:

In the latter plan, the four highest-ranked teams at the end of the regular season would meet in semifinals unless the Big Ten or Pac-12 champion, or both, were among the top four. Those leagues' teams still would meet in the Rose, and the next highest-ranked team or teams would slide into the semis. The national championship finalists would be selected after those three games.

So, this would be some sort of hybrid playoff scenario, but there are many problems I see in this. First off the Rose Bowl is an awesome bowl game and one of the few I actually sit down and watch, but the bowl wants to keep their tradition alive while everyone else wants to move forward.

NCAA President Mark Emmert See 'Momentum' Toward An Eight-Team Playoff

College football is moving toward some sort of playoff come the 2014 and it is likely to be very small and include only four teams. That is fine, because a four-team playoff is better than what the current system provides for a national championship. The BCS meetings that took place in Dallas last week provided more questions than answers, mainly surrounding logistics.

A four-team model is my prediction of what will happen in 2014, however NCAA president Mark Emmert is predicting that an eight-team playoff is gaining support:

"The momentum seems to be -- and I'm just reading the tea leaves, pretty much like you -- the momentum seems to be toward an eight-team playoff," he said.

"We'll have to see how it works. I don't know whether it will really occur or not. I think there's a reasonable possibility it could."

With an eight-team model it could allow for automatic bids to the lower hanging BCS leagues such as the Big East and the ACC who have not had too many teams ranked in the top four recently. However, that is a topic for another day, which I assure all it is coming now that basketball is officially over.

One thing to remember about the NCAA in regards to FBS football: They have zero control over what happens. Even in saying that, it is refreshing to see the president of the NCAA come is saying that there is support over an eight-team playoff.

BCS Meetings Take Place, So Naturally Nothing Happens

The BCS had one of their meetings on Monday to discuss what sort of college football playoff system would be taking place in the 2014 season. There has been discussion of a plus-one played after the traditional bowl games, four-team playoff, conference champions in a four-team playoff, and pretty much any option.

Well that is except anything beyond a four-team model:

After hours and hours at the meetings the decisions that were being made ended up being more on where and when a playoff would take place than how. The same tired questions keep being presented such as why should we ask fans to travel multiple times to see their team play or the advantage of playing at home even though the lower seed is virtually identical to the higher seed.

Mountain West Could Still Receive AQ Status For 2012 Season

As is said in the movie Dumber and Dumber, "So you are saying there is a chance." That is exactly what BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock is saying. One thing going for the Mountain West is that the league knows who is going to be there in 2012, and it will include the Boise St. Broncos. With Boise State in the league for 2012 it will definitely give a boost in the chances that the Mountain West does get the coveted AQ status

Brett McMurphy from CBS Sports is reporting that the Hancock is looking to speed up the process by getting the Presidential Oversight Committee together:

BCS executive director Bill Hancock told CBSSports.com Wednesday that the BCS will continue to try to get the Presidential Oversight Committee together on a conference call, but Hancock said there is no immediate deadline when the committee would vote and one may not be conducted until the start of the season, in late August or early September.

I understand that getting a people in the committee together, but the vote may not be done until the season starts? There has to be a way to get everyone together and to vote by early August.

Why Does Big 10 Support A Four-Team Playoff?

Just a few days aso the Big 10 proposed a four-team playoff that would have the top two seeds hosting the lower seeds, and then a title game would be played to determine a champion. However, there has to be a reason to why the Big 10 would be receptive to a playoff. Some argue that the Big 10 is progressive with the Big 10 Network and adding Nebraska to create a title game. Those were done for financial gains and to keep up with their Pac-12 counterparts with expansion, plus the Big 10 really likes their money which is why they want to keep the Rose Bowl as it makes them a ton of cash.

Listening the most recent Solid Verbal episode with Spencer Hall they were talking about the Big 10's willingness to adopt a playoff system. However, Hall brings up a great point and says that the Big 10 is attached at the hip with the Rose Bowl because of how much money it brings to the league. He went on to mention that it makes perfect sense for the Big 10 to want to protect their investment in the Rose Bowl and have the smallest playoff as possible.

Arizona State President Calling For An Eight-Team Playoff

The Big 10 has already tossed out their support for a four-team playoff model, but Arizona State president Michael Crow thinking bigger and want an eight-team playoff. Crow has been in favor of an eight-team playoff since January, and he recently told the Arizona Republic that the his Pac-12 counterparts are not keen on the current BCS set up:

"The reason for this new model [Crow's eight-team playoff proposal] is the model we have right now is not conducive to the long-term success of college football," Crow said.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said the conference has not yet taken a position on the future of the BCS.

"We are open-minded, and we'll continue to look at some creative approaches. I am confident we can improve upon post-season college football," Scott said in an e-mail to The Republic.

Crow's plan is to include conference champions only and run through the NCAA and away from the bowls which he says have been corrupt. He should know since the Fiesta Bowl scandal was in his backyard.

The only problem with an eight-team playoff with only conference champions is that it would leave deserving teams out, and would likely include two conference champions who may or may not be deserving from the Mountain West, Conference USA, Sun Belt or WAC. Historically one of those conference champions would be a worthy team, but finding a second team that could compete would be a stretch in most years.

There definitely will be a lot of negotiations going on (probably for a very long time) to determine what the best playoff option would be. So get used to a lot of these trickling out.
