Mountain West Basketball Championship Open Thread: San Diego State Vs. New Mexico

The finals for the 2012 Mountain West basketball tournament is set with the No. 1 San Diego State taking on No. 2 New Mexico. San Diego State used a big second half to thwart of Colorado State to win 79-69 and then the late game was very exciting between New Mexico and host UNLV. New Mexico trailed 12-0 and 17-4 early in the game, but they came back to beat UNLV by five points.

Both San Diego State and New Mexico split the season series and each team has been playing well down the stretch with San Diego State playing slightly better. With this being the championship game between the top two seeds and both teams being ranked it better be good.

No. 1 San Diego St. Aztecs vs. No. 2 New Mexico Lobos, 7 p.m. ET (NBC Sports Network)

2012 Mountain West Tournament Semifinal Open Thread

Half of the quarterfinal matchups in the 2012 Mountain West Conference Tournament were not close outside of San Diego State's buzzer-beater win over Boise State and the closer than expected matchup between UNLV and Wyoming where UNLV struggled in the second half to allow Wyoming to make this game somewhat close in a 56-48 final.

The other two games featured the Colorado St. Rams showing that they mean business by just crushing the TCU Horned Frogs 81-60. The other saw New Mexico take care of Air Force 79-64.

Here is Friday's schedule, and both games will be on CBS Sports Network (bracket here):

9:00 p.m. ET: No. 1 San Diego St. Aztecs vs. No. 4 Colorado St. Rams

11:30 p.m. ET: No. 2 New Mexico Lobos vs. No. 3 UNLV Runnin' Rebels

These games should be excellent games, and I could see Colorado State pulling off the upset if they play like they did against TCU and if San Diego State plays like they did against Boise State. Colorado State and San Diego State both split their games and neither were really that close with both teams winning on their home court, so with this game being on a neutral court we will see what happens.

As for who will win, I am leaning toward San Diego State, but according the the mighty AccuScore they actually give Colorado State the edge by winning this matchup 51.8 percent of the time with a final score of 65.1 to 64.9. Basically a toss up after the 10,000 simulations.

The second game should be interesting because these two teams are very good, however the two times they played it was a complete blowout in favor of the home team. As we all know UNLV is hosting the Mountain West tournament on their home court, so the edge has to go to UNLV.

As for UNLV vs. New Mexico, AccuScore gives UNLV a slight edge by winning 51.3 percent of the time and an average final score of 67.2 to to 66.1 for UNLV.

The only bad thing about these games are that they are played so late at night, too bad they could not be moved up two hours, but here is hoping these two games are awesome and worth staying up late for.

SDSU Wins Second Straight Mountain West Title

Photo

The San Diego State Aztecs secured their second consecutive regular season championship on Saturday night with a thrilling victory over the TCU Horned Frogs, along with the #1 seed in the MWC tournament. They share the conference title with pre-season favorites New Mexico.

As with many Aztec games this season, the win was hard earned and came down to the wire. SDSU blew an 18-point second half lead to trail TCU by 3 going into the final minute of play. The situation may have seemed dire, but then, haven’t we seen this before?

2012 Mountain West Conference Tournament: The Overused 'If The Tournament Began Today'

There is one last game in the Mountain West basketball season and the tournament seeding is way up in the air, and many things can change after Saturday's contest. Over at TheMWC.com they put together an indepth breakdown of how schools fare if they tie, and it is lengthy. As of right now here is how the first round of the Mountain West tournament would be seeded.

No. 1 San Diego St. Aztecs -- They get top seed even though they are tied with New Mexico at 9-4, because they swept TCU while New Mexico went 1-1.
No. 2 New Mexico Lobos
No. 3 UNLV Runnin' Rebels
No. 4 Colorado St. Rams -- They get No. 4 seed due to better RPI than TCU, this is after going down the tie-breaking procedures quite a bit.
No. 5 TCU Horned Frogs
No. 6 Wyoming Cowboys
No. 7 Air Force Falcons -- Falcons get No. 7 due to split with San Diego State
No. 8 Boise St. Broncos

Colorado State Vs. New Mexico Basketball Open Thread

This is a huge game for Colorado State if they want to get back in the NCAA tournament picture, so far Colorado State has a good RPI but that has come from playing a tough schedule yet having one really good win which came against Colorado State.

New Mexico will look to flex their muscles and show why they are the Mountain West's best team if they can easily get past Colorado State.

AccuScore predicts a close game with New Mexico projected to win 55 percent of the time by a score of 70.2 to 67.5.
