Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #1 2008 Utah Utes

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number one spot.

#1 Utah Utes 2008 (13-0)

This team was expected to be good, but not this good.  This team had close calls with multiple teams and needed two come from behind wins against Oregon State and TCU.  No one was talking about BCS until the TCU matchup when Utah was 9-0 heading into that game, and then even more after their win.

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #2 2004 Utah Utes

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number four spot.  Sorry for the delay in these posts.

#2 2004 Utah Utes (12-0)

This is the first team to bust through the BCS form being outside of a non-automatic qualifying league and they did so at the toughest standard by needing a sixth ranking to gain access.  This team was coached by Urban Meyer who took the Utes to a whole new level by defeating every team easily with the closest game against Air Force that was 49-35, and a game that was in question for part of the contest.

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #3 2009 TCU Horned Frogs

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number three spot.

#3 2009 TCU Horned Frogs (12-1)

TCU was nearly one second away from playing for the national title, but Texas was fortunate enough to have that second to kick the game winning field goal.  This TCU team was the most dominant in Mountain West play history by destroying Utah and BYU who as well as ACC runner-up Clemson.

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #4 2008 TCU Horned Frogs

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number four spot.  Sorry for the delay in these posts.

#4 2008 TCU Horned Frogs (11-2)

Another strong team by TCU that was very, very close to be playing in a BCS game, but they came up a field goal short in a 13-10 loss to Utah.  TCU's freshman kicker actually missed two field goals that could have iced the game.  This team was able to finish the regular season BCS eligible at 11th prior to their meeting with Boise State, and then ended up being ranked seventh when the season was over.

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #5 2005 TCU Horned Frogs

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number five spot.

#5 TCU Horned Frogs (11-1)

This was the first year that TCU was in the Mountain West and they ran through the league undefeated behind a patented Gary Patterson defense that was top 25 nationally in total defense.  This team surprised all teams in the Mountain West as they were predicted to finish fifth in the league.  This team had one of the biggest upsets of the year when they defeated Oklahoma in Norman.  At the time Oklahoma was ranked seventh in nation and propolled TCU into premature BCS talks as a follow up to what conference mate Utah achieved the previous year.

Best of the Decade: TCU or Utah?

The best of the decade has been running over at ESPN with the latest non-AQ rankings being released for the best program. The top of the list is Boise State which is not really up for debate since they matched Utah as the only other school to have two undefeated season in the BCS era, eight conference titles, zero losing seasons, and eight double digit winning season. It was that second undefeated BCS season that put them over the top.

Now, the second and third choice goes to TCU and then Utah. Hmmm, and some Utah fans are not pleased with Graham Watson or these rankings.  On first glance Utah looks to be a clear favorite over TCU with their bowl winning streak, wins over BCS schools, and the two undefeated BCS seasons.  Utah could be credited with busting open the door in 2004 proving they can play with the big boys and possibly opening up the chance for non-BCS teams to play for the BCS title with their dominate win over Alabama.

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #6 2006 BYU Cougars

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number sixth spot.

# 6 2006 BYU Cougars (11-2)

This was the team that started the resurgence of BYU football after the dark Gary Crowton years.  That year the Cougs lost two games to Arizona and Boston College on the road by a combined ten points.  This year also will be remembered for the Utah win on a last second play that featured the line "Harline is Still Open."

Best of the 2000's Counting Down the Mountain West Top 10 Teams: #7 2009 BYU Cougars

Now, it is time to continue the countdown of the decades best team, and now we move to the number seven spot.

# 7 2009 BYU Cougars (11-2)

This year's BYU team was somewhat of a failure because they experienced the high of highs by beating Oklahoma on opening weekend and then they lost to Florida State a few weeks later and the season felt lost.  This team did rebound after that loss as well as the TCU loss to finish with the schools fourth straight ten win season.  This squad featured seven All-Mountain West first or second team players, and per usual had a great offense.
