UNLV Vs. San Diego State Final Score: Rebels Upset Aztecs With Defense, 65-63
While the game between UNLV and San Diego State was amazing there was a lot of other stuff going on that merit attention in this game, but before we get to that stuff lets talk about the game itself. UNLV nearly blew an 18-point lead and let San Diego State back in this game and UNLV went on a scoring drought late in the second half.
San Diego State crawled their way back into the game and took a 63-62 lead on a Chase Tapley three-pointer, and then on the following possession UNLV missed their own three-pointer. UNLV's Mike Moser stole the ball from Xavier Thomas and set up a layup for Anthony Marshall to put them back up by one point. Then Marshall stole the ball from San Diego State which eventually lead to Justin Hawkins making one of two free throws to give UNLV a 63-65 lead.
The defensive play for UNLV was the steal at the end of the game by Hawkins with 10 seconds left which did not allow San Diego State to have a chance to tie or win the game.
UNLV was lead once again by Moser who had a team-high 19 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four blocks.
HIghlights and photos from the game are after the jump:

Why BYU and Utah really left the MW
A very interesting article citing the numbers behind the exits of the Cougars and the Utes. It really drives home the desolate future of life with the Mtn.
My favorite sign from the UNLV-SDSU game.

MW Commissioner pushing expansion
According to an article in the Denver Post, Mountain West Commissioner, "the Hair" himself but speaking through a representative, admits that 8 just isn't enough. The way the argument is framed, Mr. Thompson seems to be using this as more justification for the "alliance" instead of bolstering the MW and its current regional footprint. From 22 teams down to 16/15, the alliance will face an uphill battle for recognition, TV contracts and open doors in general. Whatever happens, the Commish needs to have things in place by June 30th.
Mountain West Basketball Open Thread: SDSU Vs. UNLV Is Main Event
There are some big games today in the Mountain West and none are bigger than the matchup between two top-20 teams in San Diego State and UNLV. The first time around these two teams played it was San Diego State who won, but this time the game is in Las Vegas.
Wyoming vs. New Mexico is a battle of bubble teams, but it is Wyoming who needs this win more than New Mexico. Then there is Colorado State against TCU, and while the marquee wins for Colorado State are slim they just need to rack up as many wins as possible to get a good look at the NCAA tournament.
Game schedule:
Wyoming Cowboys at New Mexico Lobos 3:30 p.m. ET (The Mtn.)
San Diego St. Aztecs at UNLV Rebels 4 p.m. ET (NBC Sports)
Colorado St. Rams at TCU Horned Frogs 8:30 p.m. ET (The Mtn.)
Boise St. Broncos at Air Force Falcons 9 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network)
Enjoy the games and remember if you wish to comment in our open thread you must register on the site. Also, if you are at a game or not able to watch the game make sure to use the mobile version of our site or the SB Nation iPhone and Android app.
UNLV fans prank San Diego State by placing a grammatically incorrect sign.
Nevada Hires Former Colorado State Associate Head Coach Larry Lewis to Round Out Coaching Staff
As a follow up on my post the other day, Nevada has hired Larry Lewis to fill its last vacant position on their new-look coaching staff. Lewis spent 2011 as an associate head coach for the Colorado State Rams, so he should bring some knowledge of the MWC with him to the Pack. Lewis will serve as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator.
Why Does Big 10 Support A Four-Team Playoff?
Just a few days aso the Big 10 proposed a four-team playoff that would have the top two seeds hosting the lower seeds, and then a title game would be played to determine a champion. However, there has to be a reason to why the Big 10 would be receptive to a playoff. Some argue that the Big 10 is progressive with the Big 10 Network and adding Nebraska to create a title game. Those were done for financial gains and to keep up with their Pac-12 counterparts with expansion, plus the Big 10 really likes their money which is why they want to keep the Rose Bowl as it makes them a ton of cash.
Listening the most recent Solid Verbal episode with Spencer Hall they were talking about the Big 10's willingness to adopt a playoff system. However, Hall brings up a great point and says that the Big 10 is attached at the hip with the Rose Bowl because of how much money it brings to the league. He went on to mention that it makes perfect sense for the Big 10 to want to protect their investment in the Rose Bowl and have the smallest playoff as possible.
