Its sad to say that at this point of the season its almost expected that the Colorado State secondary will have a lapse in coverage leading to a big play touchdown. The situation occurred once again for Colorado State in what ended up being a 42-30 loss to Boise State. The loss now means that Boise State now controls their destiny in the Mountain Division for a berth in the inaugural Mountain West Championship game. The loss for Colorado State means that they need to win 3 out of 4 to become bowl eligible.
The game started with Colorado State taking the opening possession right down the field and getting a field goal. The drive was 15 plays and nearly took off six minutes however the Rams couldn't punch it in for a touchdown from the 5 yard line. The following possession for the Broncos ended in one play due to a bobbled exchange between Grant Hedrick and the running back. Colorado State recovered at the Boise 18 yard line this time scoring a touchdown when Kapri Bibbs scored from three yards out. It extended the lead to 10-0 and it seemed that Colorado State could possibly run away with it. All those thoughts were put to bed when the Broncos took advantage of a short field and Hedrick ran for a 2 yard touchdown to bring them within a field goal.
The second quarter was when Boise all but put this game to bed. The Broncos scored touchdown on all three of their second quarter possessions and only took 4:19 off the game clock. The big shift in momentum happened when after the Rams scored to take a 17-14 lead, the Broncos were faced with a 3rd and 4 from their own 32 yard line. Grant Hedrick hit Shane Williams-Rhodes on what looked like a wheel route down the sideline for a 68 yard touchdown. The play was reviewed and though it looked like he stepped out of bounds, there was no disputable evidence to overturn the play giving the Broncos a 21-17 lead. Garrett Grayson fumbled on the next possession giving the ball back to the Broncos at their 32 yard line. Boise marched down the field and scored extending the lead to 28-17. The Rams had a drive that looked promising to end the half but the field goal hit the bottom post at the end of the half.
In the third quarter Boise officially put the game to bed for good on the first possession march down the field and scored in five plays extending the lead to 35-17. The Ram student section officially headed towards the exits. Other than this possession neither team scored. The highlight of the quarter was a kick catch interference penalty in which was turned into a targeting penalty. The play was reviewed and overturned when on replay there was no helmet to helmet contact at all.
The final quarter had a spark of excitement in what was left of the Colorado State fans but when another secondary lapse lead to a 42 yard touchdown pass by Hedrick his 5th of the game there was a mass exodus of fans. Boise State extended the lead to 42-17. Colorado State scored two touchdowns both Kapri Bibbs touchdown runs and recovered an onside kick that started to make things interesting. However on the following play Grayson threw an interception officially eliminating any chance of a magical Hughes Stadium comeback for Colorado State. Boise ran out the clock and won 42-30 improving to 6-3 and a 4-1 conference record. This also puts them in control of their destiny for the mountain division title and a possible rematch of the 41-40 classic against Fresno State. The loss drops Colorado State to 4-5 and 2-2 in conference play. The Rams have to win 3 out of 4 to make a bowl game. Boise has a week off before taking on Wyoming and Colorado State takes on Nevada next Saturday at 1:30 pm.
