Colorado State Rams Offense Shut Down, Loses 13-0 to Utah State

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Rams high powered offense completely shut down, drops a defensive battle to Utah State 13-0 dropping to 6-6 overall.

Colorado State ran into a concrete wall.. Literally! The high powered offense in recent weeks played its toughest defense all season other than Alabama in Utah State. Also the fact that the wind gusts made it very difficult to throw the ball down field to set up their daunting run game. Utah State stacked the box and their front 7 was in the backfield on nearly every play. So to say that the offensive line couldn't get a push is a massive understatement. Kapri was held to under 100 yards for the first time since the San Jose State game on October 12th. He also ended a streak of multiple games of three touchdowns or more. The Aggie defense wanted to prove that they can shut down the best running back in the Mountain West and that point was proven.

Garrett Grayson had a rough game from the opening possession of the game he was intercepted off a tipped ball, but the Ram defense made sure that the Aggies couldn't capitalize. They were the one bright spot in this game, they played their hearts out and Shaq Barrett continued to get in the backfield and get sacks along with tackles for loss. On a 4th down the Rams perfectly executed a fake punt resulting in a first down. Grayson had one of this best throws all game when he hit Kivon Cartwright on the following play to get them deep into Utah State territory. They couldn't capitalize because kicker Jared Roberts had a 21 yard field goal hit off the upright when looked like it was going to sneak through the left upright. That was one of many signs that the wind was going to be a major factor in this game.

Otherwise the first half was a snooze fest for offensive lovers and a defensive battle for defensive fans. A late field goal in the first half prevented it from being a first half shutout for both teams. When the Aggies went up 3-0 The second half started with Utah State driving down the field on a long 11 play drive to take a 10-0 lead when Joey DeMartino rushed for a one yard touchdown. The Ram defense had numerous chances to get off the field on the drive but gave up first downs to extend drives. The Aggie defense frustrated the Ram offense the rest of the game not allowing them to get any chances of putting points on the board. The Rams could never establish a rhythm on offense because their strength was shut down. They also couldn't pass because of the wind. Garrett Grayson threw a late interception which all but sealed this game in favor of the Aggies.

Colorado State drops to 6-6 and will take on Air Force on senior day. That game will be November 30th at 12:00 Noon kickoff. That game can be watched on ESPN3. Utah State improves to 7-4 and controls its destiny in the mountain division. They will take on Wyoming Saturday November 30th that game can be watched on Root Sports.
