The extremely cold weather or lack of fans in the stands did not prevent UNLV from putting up a 41-21 win over Air Force. That win gave UNLV six triumphs for the first time since 2003, and more than likely means the Rebels will be heading to a bowl game for the first time since 2000, where they defeated Arkansas in the Las Vegas Bowl.
UNLV got off to a great start in the game by blocking an Air Force punt in the first quarter, and they followed it up with a Tim Cornett 22-yard rushing touchdown to give the Rebels an early lead. From that point on UNLV never trailed and did not look back, and neither did Cornett who had career highs in yards with 220 and touchdowns with four. Cornett had three touchdowns in the first half.
With the extreme cold weather which saw the windchill be in the negative and plenty of gusting winds, and that prevented either team from passing the ball. At first glance that would help Air Force but no Falcons player had over 100 yards; Anthony LaCoste led the way with 75.
UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring only passed when he needed to with 18 attempts, but he was on the money by completing 15 of those for 141 yards. Herring played a key roll running the ball two with a pair of first quarter touchdowns, and ended the night with 56 yards on the ground.
UNLV raced out to a 27-0 lead 20 minutes into the game before Air Force got on the board on a nice 31-yard pass from Nate Romine to Alex Ludowig. Air Force actually made this a game when they scored a touchdown at the end of the first half and then score the only touchdown in the third quarter to make it a 33-21 affair heading into the fourth quarter.
Neither team moved the ball well in the final quarter until Cornett broke off a 46-yard touchdown run to put UNLV up for good with 2:03 left in the game, and then the Rebels for some reason decided to go for a two-point conversion which they converted.
The six wins should take UNLV to a bowl game and the likely scenario is the Hawaii Bowl.
Here is an idea of the conditions -- both crowd and weather -- for this game.
