Hawaii vs. San Diego State game preview: Warriors still looking for their first win

San Diego State is looking to become bowl eligible, while Hawaii is looking for their first win of the year.

The Hawaii football team is coming back home after an exhausting 10-plus day road trip that featured a lengthy delay in Los Angeles before heading to to Logan, Utah, and the rest of the trip had them continuing out East to play Navy. Playing back in their own stadium must be nice, but being 0-9 still has to sting.

There are a few positives for Hawaii that could allow them to just maybe pull off the upset against San Diego State. First off, head coach Norm Chow stuck with just one quarterback in Sean Schroeder last week against Navy. Yes, the Warriors lost but they refrained from playing the quadrants of quarterbacks this past week. Schroeder performed well by completing 23 of 33 passes for 246 yards and three scores, but it was not enough against Navy.

The other reason for optimism is that running back Joey Iosefa is finally fully healthy after suffering a fractured, and last week against Navy rushed for 191 yards and a score. If Hawaii can get a similar performance from Iosefa and Schroeder then the Aztecs better be ready.

As for San Diego State, they are playing some of their best football of late by winning five of their last six games, and came within a few plays of upsetting Fresno State. The Aztecs offense has improved during that stretch with quarterback Quinn Kaehler stepping into the starting roll and finally becoming comfortable. Also what helps is having running back Adam Muema fully healthy from his early season ankle injury, plus Donnel Pumphrey has become a nice second fiddle to Muema in the running game.

The Aztecs are the better team and that is why they are favored by five points against Hawaii. Plus, San Diego State has some incentive to win this game; a win will get them to six wins and become bowl eligible once again.

If Hawaii does happen to fall against San Diego State, they will be doing so in style with their retro night uniforms which are a callback to when they were always known as the Rainbow Warriors.
