It's safe to say New Mexico has a dominant rushing attack; the Lobos have been ranked in the top five for yards gained on the ground during the last couple of years. Under Bob Davie the Lobos rushing attack has been efficient and has been their primary weapon on offense. During the off season there have been talks of a balanced offense for the Lobos which would actually benefit the triple option attack.
An efficient passing game will only open up the running lanes for the New Mexico running backs. When a defense has to respect that pass they cannot stack the box to stop the run which will open up the field. An open field would benefit Teriyon Gipson and Jhurell Pressley who were the Lobos leading rushers in 2014, both running backs are true weapons that can break along run from anywhere on the field.
Gipson who finished last season with 809 yards and eight touchdowns, his longest run was 57 yards while averaging 5.4 yards per carry. His break out came against Boise State on November 8th when he had a carrier high 205 yards on 24 carriers with three touchdowns. Pressley on the other hand finished the season with 1,086 yards and 12 touchdowns recording six 100 yard games last year. He was the Lobos home run hitter averaging 9.2 yards per carry with a 77 yarder being his longest.
In 2015, there will be lots of yards to gain on the ground but can the Lobos have duel 1,000 yard backs this year? It a possibility if both back stays healthy, New Mexico returns four starting linemen this year which helps. Lamar Jordan can take carries away from them because he had 612 yards on the ground last year and while he may not start at quarterback he will still get some carries he could also be a dark horse to surpass the 1000 yards rushing this year.
With all of the success Lobo running backs have had there still in not a Lobo in an NFL backfield but after the 2015-2016 seasons that may change. Jhurell Pressley may change that he is rated as the country's seventh most explosive player in college football by NFL.com. He is the type of player that can be a third down back and special teams player at the next level. He will be the teams featured back but look for Gipson to get lots of carries in the triple option attack and while the team will pass the ball still look for the rushing attack to be the focal point of the team's offense.
