The Boise State Broncos will be getting its likely quarterback of the future earlier than expected. Four-star quarterback -- and nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien -- Brett Rypien verbally committed to Boise State back in April, and per Chad Cripe of the Idaho Statesman, Rypien will be on campus in January.
Rypien is not signing a National Letter of Intent but he will be agreeing to a financial aid agreement and that essentially takes the place of the NLI and allow the coaches to discuss Rypien's commitment publicly.
"Once I sign that, I'll be pretty much dialed in," Rypien told the Idaho Statesman Sunday. "I'll have to do some work over winter break to finish classes because our semester ends after Boise's begins."
He also had to take a few classes over the summer to be able to graduate prior to December, and by graduating early Rypien will be able to compete for the starting job that will be open next year.
In the spring, Rypien will compete with Ryan Finley who will be a redshirt sophomore, Alex Ogle a redshirt freshman and then Tommy Stuart who will be a junior or a redshirt sophomore but that depends on if he plays this season.
In addition to announcing of enrolling early, Rypien made it to his very first game at Albertson's Stadium where he saw the Broncos take care of Louisiana-Lafayette during his official visit. He said the atmosphere "was unbelievable" when seeing the team run out on the field and the crowd before the game.
The growing trend is to enroll early for any position to get a leg up in hopes of seeing playing time in one's freshman year and not have to redshirt. Rypien is coming in at the right time with Grant Hedrick on his way out and it appears Finley will be the favorite since he is the current backup to Hedrick and he was a three-star quarterback coming out of high school.
