It certainly wasn't a flawless performance for the Boise State Broncos but they have to be happy to come away with a victory and improve to 2-1 (1-0) on the season after defeating Connecticut, 38-21. Boise State was led by Grant Hedrick and his 233 yards passing to go along with a pair touchdowns and also while catching another on the trick play. It's nice to have former Offensive Coordinator turned Coach, Brian Harsin, back in Boise.
Although the Broncos only managed 292 yards of offense, they were able to hold UConn under 300 yards and come up with a pair of defensive touchdowns to start the scoring in the first quarter and end the scoring in the fourth to contain the Huskies. It was impressive what the Broncos were able to get done on defense against UConn.
The game Saturday may serve as a measuring stick for the Broncos for a key game down the road with BYU. The Cougars defeated the Huskies in Connecticut in the season opener 35-10 in impressive fashion and began their 3-0 start. I believe the Cougars have thus far looked like the better team, but Boise St has controlled the series between the two particularly at Bronco Stadium. It's five weeks away, but kind of fun to look forward to what could be the biggest game of the season for both teams. Boise St definitely showed the defense is coming closer to where they need to be.
UConn benefited from 209 yards and two touchdown passes while completing 16 of 29 from Chandler Whitmer, who found Deshon Foxx for 107 yards. They exploited the Boise St secondary at times, but were unable to take advantage and avoid turnovers.
The only way to move Saturday seemed to be through the air. Both teams combined for just 100 yards on the ground, with Jay Ajayi being held to just 39 yards on 18 rushes. UConn read the scouting report well after watching Boise St against CSU, loading the box and stuffing the Broncos, who averaged less than 2 yards per carry.
