At this point six MWC players of the 23 drafted have signed and four were juniors. That hurts Fresno State the most as Derick Velazquez and Chris Mariscal both sign and now coach has to find someone to fill their positions. San Diego State loses a junior in Brandon Thomas and he's one of those mysteries I was talking about in an earlier post. He pitched little and I didn't see a lot in his stats but, the pros knows. That leaves 14 other juniors who are weighing their options. Coaches want their players to have a good career (and life) but they WOULD like to have them for one more year. I figure the juniors high in the draft are as good as gone. Those would be Erick Fedde (first round), Michael Cederoth (third), and Jordan Luplow (third). San Diego State's Greg Allen (sixth) is not far behind and I think he'll sign also. I had John Richy on this short list but he has signed in the last day or two.
Erick Fedde is a good point for discussion. He's worth the first round pick and the two to three million bonus he'll get. Casey Gillaspie (Wichita State) was taken two picks below Fedde and he signed for a bonus of $2.03M. However, Fedde will be unavailable for about a year as he recently had Tommy John surgery. I'm sure that will be a bargaining point. I'm actually thinking he may very well return to UNLV as he may feel that there's some unfinished business he has to tend to. Keep an eye on that pick.
