SDSU vs Mississippi State: What Went Wrong, From Interim Head Coach Mark Martinez

USA TODAY Sports

San Diego State baseball interim head coach Mark Martinez gives us his thoughts on why the Aztecs fell to Mississippi State and what he predicts for the Louisiana-Lafayette game on Saturday.

A game that started off with the Aztecs up 2-0 in the top of the second inning, quickly turned into a 5-2 Mississippi State Bulldog victory.

In the bottom of the second inning the Aztecs gave up four runs, this is where interim head coach Mark Martinez saw the game get away from his team.

"We made a mistake in the bottom of the second inning. It really took the wind out of our sails, which is amazing to even say that because it was only the second inning... We got down 4-2, but it felt like 12-2... It felt like a blowout," said a disappointed Martinez.

Martinez was upset with the fact that his team was unable to battle back after the second inning.

"It's hard for me to say that because this group is a veteran team and they know how to handle dealing with being down two runs and we didn't handle that very well today (Friday) overall as a program."

The main point he wanted to get across was, "We allowed Mississippi State to win the game. We didn't do anything to put pressure on them."

On a positive note the Aztecs did get to Bulldog starting pitcher Trevor Fitts early, scoring two runs and loading up the bases twice in the second inning.

"On the positive side we managed our at-bats, we got pitches in the zone to hit, and we covered him (Fitts)... We were patient."

Martinez said his message to the guys following the loss was simple, "We've been here before and it seems like we play better with our backs up against the wall."

He is referring to losing against UNLV earlier in the Mountain West Tournament then battling back to beat them and win the tournament title for the second straight year.

When I asked if he would approach Saturday's possible season-ending game differently, he simply stated, "It's more same old, same old... do what we're capable of doing. Don't change who we are: manage your at bats, grind out ABs, play great defense... That's who we are, that's why we've won 42 games this season."

Martinez says this team is definitely not ready to end their season on Saturday.

"The goal going into this season was to go to Omaha, we have a team to do that... We understand that winning is hard and so we know that tomorrow (Saturday) is going to be a great test for us."

Saturday the Aztecs take on the No.1 ranked team in the country, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Martinez has high hopes.

"Our guys expect a win... And we're going to come out tomorrow (Saturday) expecting a win."

See the Aztecs take on Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
