2015 San Diego State football recruiting: Aztecs land verbal commit from LB Jeff Clay

Ethan Miller

Linebacker Jeff Clay is San Diego State's first commit for the 2015 class.

"Back when they told me I had an offer I was excited because it was unexpected," Clay said. "I had wanted to go to that school and (Schmidt) talked with me every now and then so I felt comfortable with him. Then I told him I wanted to commit.

"I've been liking San Diego State football a lot and it's close to home. I've looked up their highlights and the campus and everything and I liked what I saw. I really want to play on that team and I'm going to stay committed to the school."

The San Diego State Aztecs earn their first commit for the 2015 recruiting class landed the very versatile Jeff Clay who is out of Lancaster, Calif. Clay is expected to play linebacker for the Aztecs but the 6-foot-1, 205-pounder but he also played defensive end, cornerback, wide receiver and even quarterback in high school, and has been clocked at a 4.6, 40-yard dash.

Clay moved from cornerback to the outside linebacker/defensive end spot and his high school head coach Ron Wilson felt that really brought the best out of Clay:

"Once we moved him to that OLB/DE position in Game 4 or 5 last season, he just ran with it," Antelope Valley coach Wilson said. "We put him at OLB and he changed our defense. ...Anything he didn't know he learned on the fly, he's easy to coach."

Those comments give the impression that Clay could be a project at the FBS level with San Diego State. In his junior year, Clay had 54 tackles in including 12 for a loss in 10 games, and those numbers were for a part time defender for half of the season.

The Aztecs were his first offer -- and currently only offer -- plus they are a team he likes since it is close to home ($):

"Back when they told me I had an offer I was excited because it was unexpected," Clay said. "I had wanted to go to that school and (Schmidt) talked with me every now and then so I felt comfortable with him. Then I told him I wanted to commit.

"I've been liking San Diego State football a lot and it's close to home. I've looked up their highlights and the campus and everything and I liked what I saw. I really want to play on that team and I'm going to stay committed to the school."

Clay also mentioned that making the switch to defense grew on him since he can be free and roam more to make plays, however he is expected to be his high school team's starting quarterback in the fall. Overall he is an extremely talented athlete,

He has not visited San Diego State despite accepting their scholarship offer and Clay intends to visit the school in the summer.

Take a look at his junior highlights.
