2014 NFL Draft: Could Derek Carr be the No. 1 quarterback, player overall?

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

With the news that Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater could be staying in school could mean that Fresno State's Derek Carr might be the top quarterback off the board.

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr is one of the top signal callers in the 2014 NFL Draft class, and it is possible that he could be the top quarterback off the board, and maybe even the No. 1 overall selection. In a recent mock draft down by SB Nation, Carr was the No. 2 pick overall and was behind Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

However, there is news that Bridgewater might actually consider returning to Louisville for one more year.

This is some pretty shocking news if he does plan to return to school, because for one he is giving up a lot of money which he can never earn back by going back to school for another year.

Plus, recent history has not been kind to college quarterbacks who returned for another year; Jake Locker of the Washington Huskies was projected to go No. 1 by some NFL Draft experts for the 2010 draft, but he ended up going No. 8 in 2011. That is not as bad as USC's Matt Barkley who was considered the best quarterback, but due to an awful senior season by his team he fell to the fourth round.

Precedent gives Bridgewater a pretty clear choice on what to do and that is to move onto the NFL so that he does not become one of the mentioned players who lost a lot of money by returning to school.

A likely reason that Bridgewater would want to stay one more is because he would a preseason Heisman trophy candidate alongside Florida State's Jameis Winston, and also that Louisville is going to the ACC and that would provide a tougher challenge then what the American brought this year.

If Bridgewater does remain in school that could boost Carr to the top quarterback in this draft class, and depending who gets the top overall pick he could be the first choice taken in the draft.
