Today the Mountain West announced its three Players of the Week.
SDSU sophomore running back Donnel Pumphrey was named the offensive POY for his performance against the UNLV Rebels. He carried it a career-high 22 times for a career-tying 167 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. So let's just say it was a career night, shall we? The sophomore continues to show his big-play capabilities, as he averaged 7.6 yards per carry last Saturday, and now averages 6.2 yards per carry on the year.
Air Force sophomore defensive back Weston Steelhammer took home defensive POY honors for his performance in Air Force's upset against Boise State. Steelhammer picked off Bronco quarterbacks three times, which ties the Mountain West and Air Force single-game record. The sophomore Falcon also joined Ohio's Quentin Poling as the only FBS players to record three interceptions in a game this season. Beyond his interceptions, Steelhammer also contributed four tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack against the Broncos.
SDSU senior punter Joel Alesi earned the special teams POY award for his performance against UNLV. Alesi punted five times against the Rebels and averaged 38.2 yards per punt. Two of his five punts pinned UNLV within its own 6-yard line, and one other punt nailed the Rebels down within their own 20-yard line.
