San Diego State sophomore pitcher Bubba Derby was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the week by College Baseball magazine. Derby was given the weekly award after his performance against the Air Force Falcons on April 4.
In that game the right-hander went for 8.1 inning striking out a career high 15 batters, while allowing just one run and three hits; easily his best performance of the season.
The Aztecs would go on to beat the Falcons 5-1. The win improved Derby to 5-0 on the season and his earned run average dropped to 1.99.
Derby was the starting closer for the Aztecs last year and has since found his way into the starting rotation. Stay tuned for an in depth story on Bubba Derby and this year starting closer Michael Cederoth in the coming days.
San Diego State is now 24-8 overall and is 10-5 in the Mountain West so far in the 2014 season.
