San Diego State vs. Ohio State final score: Aztecs no match for Buckeyes, fall 42-7

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego State had no answer for what Ohio State threw at them on Saturday afternoon.

Losing to Ohio State is nothing to be ashamed of for San Diego State, but losing in the fashion they did on Saturday is a huge cause for concern. Ohio State rushed out to a 35-0 lead at the half before ultimately winning 42-7. San Diego State did nothing right in any aspect of the game. The first major change was when starting quarterback Adam Dingwell was benched after he started 0 for 5 including an interception on the teams first play of their second possession.

Junior college transfer Quinn Kaehler was brought in to replace Dingwell, but that didn't seem to make a difference as he went 22 of 36 for 216 yards with a garbage touchdown and a pick.

San Diego State did not gain any positive yards in the first quarter and on the teams first seven possessions in the first half they punted five times fumbled once and had a pick. Their only touchdown came with 1:41 left in the third quarter when Kaehler connected with Chad Young on a two-yard pass.

Starting running back Adam Muema was limited to just three carries for five yards and no other running back was able to move the ball, but with the huge deficit the Aztecs had to pass the ball to try to stay in this game.

Nothing went right as San Diego State turned the ball over four times, went 3 of 16 on third downs and were out gained 445 to 280 yards.

Ohio State did lose Heisman hopeful quarterback Braxton Miller to a slight MCL tear in the first quarter and he did not return, but his backup Kenny Guiton did just fine carving up the Aztecs defense. Guiton completed 19 of 28 passes for 152 yards, threw for two scores and pick, plus he rushed for 83 yards with another score.

It is starting to look like this Aztecs team could be heading for a terrible season, and who knows maybe not even make it to six wins to get to a bowl game. There are a lot of things that Rocky Long needs to do this week to get his team right, or attempt to, before they host Oregon State next Saturday.
