Nevada Has Major Injury Concerns going into Hawaii Game

Could Nevada really be starting their third string quarterback and running back in their Mountain West Conference opener?

Nevada opens up in Mountain West play this week when Hawaii visits Mackay Stadium, but the news for Nevada going into the game could not be worse. Coach Brian Polian has announced that star junior quarterback Cody Fajardo is day-to-day going into the game after being injured against UC Davis. Even worse for the Wolf Pack, backup quarterback Devin Combs, who started the Florida State game in replacement of Fajardo, has been ruled out after injuring his knee late in the first half versus Florida State.

That puts Nevada in a position to potentially start third string quarterback Tyler Stewart, who in the second half of action against Florida State went 7 of 15 for 49 yards with one interception. The drop off between Fajardo and Combs is big, but the drop off from Fajardo to Stewart is even larger. The situation is so desperate, that Polian is considering burning freshman quarterback Dante' Mayes' redshirt to provide more depth at the quarterback position.

This would likely leave the Wolf Pack to rely heavily upon the run game, but the two backs who have split most of the carries this season, Don Jackson and Kendall Brock, are both banged up. This leaves the majority of the carries to redshirt freshman Chris Solomon, who hard 110 yards in the Florida State game, in the most action he has seen this year.

Overall this could put Nevada in a position to start their third string quarterback and running back, a situation that is obviously not ideal.
