2013 NFL Draft: Houston Texans select San Jose State tackle David Quessenberry at No. 176

USA TODAY Sports

San Jose State had offensive tackle David Quessenberry drafted in the sixth round.

The San Jose St. Spartans had their first player taken in the 2013 NFL Draft when offensive tackle David Quessenberry was taken by the Houston Texans with the No. 176 pick.

Quessenberry anchored the left side of the Spartans line during his junior and senior season where he started all 24 games. He was a key reason to why San Jose State won 11 games in 2011 by keeping starting quarterback David Fales upright en route to a solid season. Quessenberry was also an all-league performer in 2011 and 2012 in the WAC.

The areas where Quessenberry excel come due to him being an above average athlete for an offensive lineman. He is used in pulling plays due to that quickness and he has solid feet in the passing game. Then there is his ability to burst off the line and make good progress in short yardage situations as well as continuing to go down field and make multiple blocks.

The weakness of Quessenberry is just his size which is right at 300 pounds, and that is after bulking up over 50 pounds from high school. Adding more size and muscle strength will help him become a long term NFL lineman. To offset the lack of upper body strength, Quessenberry uses a wide stance as leverage to offset that deficit.
