2013 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars sign San Jose State tight end Ryan Otten as undrafted free agent

Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

San Jose State tight end Ryan Otten is off to the NFL.

San Jose St. Spartans tight end was rated as a top-125 prospect for the 2013 NFL Draft, but he went undrafted. He was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Otten is a good pick up since at San Jose State he saw or started in 42 games as a Spartan, and it would have been more had he not suffered a torn ligament in his sophomore year.

From the start as a Spartan Orton was a contributor as he started seven games as a redshirt freshman bue he only he caught 10 passes for 78 yards. After getting his feet wet he was off to a great sophomore before he his foot injury. His junior and senior years are where he shined as he was an All-WAC player in 2011 and 2012. In this two years he combined for 99 receptions, nine touchdowns and 1,481 yards; he also averaged 15 yards per reception.

Otten is another one of those wide receivers who is more of a pass catcher than a blocker at 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. He is very good at creating space to get open by boxing out linebackers or the unfortunate defensive back. He is also good enough to turn up field and lower his shoulder into an oncoming defender despite his lack of speed, plus he has exceptional hands.

His downside is his size at just 230 pounds making him not the ideal player to be placed in a three-point stance and be in on many running plays. He is not all that fast off the line or downfield speed, so he is not going to be a down field threat. While he has a solid effort in the blocking game he needs work in that area.

Safe to say to Otten is going to be used as a wide receiver for the most part in his NFL career, but one area where he can possibly be exceptional at is being in the three-point stance and rolling out in boot leg plays. His ability to create space and his strong hands make him great in that part of the passing game.

Here are some highlights of Otten for those who are looking to find out a bit more about the tight end:
