2013 NBA Draft: New Mexico's Tony Snell to test draft status, not hire an agent

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Tony Snell has declared for the upcoming NBA Draft, but he is not hiring an agent leaving the option to return to school.

New Mexico Lobos guard Tony Snell has elected to enter the 2013 NBA Draft, however the junior is not hiring an agent so that he can return to school if he wishes to do so. This is an odd choice since Snell averaged 12.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game in his senior, so nothing spectacular.

Good thing Snell is not hiring an agent:

"Tony has decided to test the interest level of the NBA," UNM head coach Steve Alford said. "We are helping him to gather that information. He has until April 16 to make his decision."

Snell was named the 2013 Mountain West tournament MVP by scoring 21 points against UNLV in the title game. New Mexico was expected to have all five starters back, including Snell, and were to be the heavy favorite to repeat as Mountain West champs.

UNLV is more than likely losing freshman guard Anthony Bennett to the draft, and then San Diego State is losing James Rahon and Chase Tapley and maybe also Jamaal Franklin.

Snell's attributes are that he is athletic, an 84.3 percent foul shooter and an above average shooter from beyond the arc. This decision is a peculiar one to make, but my gut says that Snell returns for his senior season.
