LAS VEGAS – Cameron Bairstow leads all scorers with 10 points and has eight rebounds as the top-seeded New Mexico Lobos lead the 4-seed San Diego St. Aztecs 29-20 in the semifinals of the 2013 Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. Friday night.
The Lobos have been able to largely contain the Aztecs offense, holding SDSU to 27 percent shooting in the first half (8 of 30) and 20 percent shooting on 3-pointers (2-10). UNM has not only contained All-MWC first teamer Jamaal Franklin - holding him to five points on 2 of 5 shooting and 1 of 3 shooting on 3-pointers. The Lobos also had Franklin sitting the final few minutes of the half with two personal fouls.
UNM came out with a 7-4 flourish but the Aztecs battled back to a 7-6 deficit. The two teams traded shots and SDSU again made a run, tying the game at 14-14 with just over eight minutes left in the half. But UNM responded with a 9-4 run to take a 27-20 lead on an Alex Kirk lay up with 1:56 left in the half.
Franklin and James Rahon both lead SDSU with five points. DeShawn Stevens leads San Diego St. with three rebounds. UNM has shot 35 percent in the first half, going 9- of 26 from the field, 3 of 8 on 3-pointers (38 percent. Alex Kirk has six points for the Lobos and four rebounds. Tony Snell has five points on 2 of 3 shooting on 3-pointers. Bairstow is also a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
New Mexico has seven turnovers, which SDSU converted into 10 points.
