More WAC-kiness

As crazy as it sounds a team actually left a fairly stable conference for the dumpster fire that is the WAC. UMKC (Missouri-Kansas City) decided to abandon the Summit where 3-5 schools are within bus distance and join the far flung WAC. With this the Summit effectively trades with the WAC bottom feeder UMKC for mid level Denver, which is the win for former. Interestingly a blogger (Mile High Mids) interview with the Denver AD said she knew of the UMKC move before making the jump. To continue with the move after Denver moved is as written by Fargo based reporter Jeff Kolpack "just plain wacky".

One thing this does is stabilize the WAC AQ thru the Grand Canyon transition (which takes 4 years), even if NMSU leaves. So I have to wonder it UMKC is being given some financial concessions by WAC in an attempt to save themselves. WAC membership plan thru the GCU transition:

  • 2013/14 - 8 - Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UMKC, UTPA, & Chicago State
  • 2014/15 - 6 - Seattle, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UMKC, UTPA, & Chicago State (Idaho & NMSU leave)
  • 2015/16 - 6 - Seattle, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UMKC, UTPA, & Chicago State
  • 2016/17 - 7 - Seattle, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UMKC, UTPA, & Chicago State plus GCU
