Wyoming coaching search: Jeff Tedford is a top target

Jed Jacobsohn

Former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford is reportedly a top target to be Wyoming's next head coach.

Today is Day 3 of the Wyoming  coaching search and another name has popped up to be a candidate to replace the fired Dave Christensen. Names that have already been brought up so far are Bob Stitt from the Colorado School of Mines, Sam Houston State's Willie Fritz and Oakland Raiders Ted Gilmore.

The biggest name to be in the running is former California head coach Jeff Tedford, and according to Wyoming beat writer Robert Gagliardi, Tedford has been contacted and there is some mutual interest. Tedford was fired from Cal after the 2012 season with his worst season ever as a head coach with a 3-9 record, and overall he had an 82-57 record during his 11 years at Cal.

Getting a big name and a solid coach like Tedford to Laramie, Wyo., and it also doesn't hurt that he is a noted college quarterback guru. Tedford has to like what he see's in an already solid quarterback in senior-to-be Brett Smith.

Noted college quarterbacks that Tedford has coached are David Carr, Aaron Rodgers, Trent Dilfer, Kyle Boller, Akili Smith and Joe Harrington. All of those players were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, and four of those went in the top 10.

Another reason to bring in Tedford is that former four-star quarterback Zach Kline who was recruited by Tedford, and recently decided to transfer. Kline would have to sit out a year but that would work perfect for Wyoming since Smith has one year left of eligibility.
