2013 Fresno State football recruiting: QB Zack Greenlee likely staying with Bulldogs

Fresno State verbal commit quarterback Zack Greenlee - Bud Elliot, SB Nation recruiting

Fresno State verbal commit Zack Greenlee is more than likely not going to commit to Mississippi State as they received their second quarterback for the 2013 class.

Fresno State fans probably freaked out when their prized recruit, four-star quarterback Zack Greenlee, took a last minute official visit to Mississippi State over the weekend. However, the news since his weekend visit has been silent, even when checking the subscription recruiting sites, nothing.

No news is typically good news in these situations, but the real good news came out when quarterback Damian Williams elected to switch his commitment from Souther Miss to Mississippi State. Williams fits what Mississippi State likes to do on offense with their spread attack as he is a dual-threat quarterback, and Greenlee is a pro-style quarterback.

Mississippi State now has two quarterbacks for their 2013 class, the other is Cord Sandberg, also a dual-threat signal caller. Greenlee's offer still stands but with Mississippi Stat having two quarterbacks in their 2013 class, and having Tyler Russell back under center for his senior season, as well as three other freshman on the roster.

With six total quarterbacks on the roster, it likely would mean that Greenlee would redshirt his first year, but then he would still be battling for the likely backup spot with at least five other quarterbacks on the roster.

Sticking with Fresno State he will still could redshirt, but then there will be an open competition in 2014 for the right to take over Derek Carr's spot. Currently Greenlee is the only quarterback in the 2013 class, and the current roster has three quarterbacks who will be around vying for the starting job.

However, one of those quarterbacks is Greg Watson, and he is very likely to be heading to the wide receiver position to showcase his versatility. If Watson does make the switch to wide receiver then that changes everything.

The other two quarterbacks are current freshman Myles Carr and Marcus McDade. The younger Carr never played and McDade took just a few snaps running the ball. With the backup spot wide open, Greenlee could end up not redshirting and competing for the starting job in 2014, by winning the backup job for the 2013 season.
