2013 San Diego State football recruiting: LB Reuben Foster takes surprise visit

Bud Elliott (SB Nation)

The top linebacker in the country is taking a visit to San Diego State.

The San Diego St. Aztecs are getting a shocker of a visit from Reuben Foster, who just happens to be the nation's top linebacker, a five-star recruit and the No. 13 player overall. Foster is taking his visit to San Diego on Tuesday Jan. 29, and the visit is a huge surprise.

Foster has been linked to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia as his top three choices, and he is scheduled to have an in-home visit with Georgia head coach Mark Richt. He was an Auburn and Alabama commit, but he has reopened his recruitment.

What is not clear is how Foster will have a visit on Jan. 29, have an in-home visit with Richt in his hometown of Auburn, Ala. The Jan. 29 visit comes from Rivals database, but the initial news said his visit would be this week.

The real question is, why is he traveling to San Diego State?

All of his offers come from the SEC, and the only other Western schools are Washington and USC. A few reasons why Foster is not likely to head to San Diego State is that he has an Auburn tattoo -- although that does not mean too much -- plus he wants to stay close to home and be near his 2-year-old daughter.

However, the reason why he is taking a visit is because his high school teammates two-star wide receiver Christian Cumberlander and three-star offensive tackle Maurice Swain are also taking a visit to the Aztecs. Plus, who wouldn't want a free trip to San Diego.

The one thing that coaches say the toughest part is just getting a kid on campus, so once Foster is on campus who knows what could happen. Once signing day comes it his highly unlikely that Foster will be an Aztec.
