2013 Utah State football recruiting: Aggies flip San Jose State commit Darrell Garretson

Russ Isabella-US PRESSWIRE

Utah State was able to get quarterback Darell Garretson to switch his commitment from San Jose State to Utah State.

The San Jose St. Spartans lost three-star quarterback Darell Garretson (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler) to the Utah State Aggies over the weekend. Garretson had been committed to San Jose State since July, but the coaching change last month had him question his choice.

Garretson is a pro-style quarterback and he is capable of playing in different sets, which is why he ultimately made the switch to Utah State. Judging by his highlight video (which is below) he is capable of throwing the deep ball, taking shotgun snaps, running the read option, out running defenders and at one point knocks over a linebacker on a spin move.

New Utah State head coach Matt Wells was able to flip Garretson to the Aggies. Garretson took his official visit to Utah State this past weekend with an open mind:

"Going into it I was really open," Garretson said of the visit. "I flipped on Sunday. I thought about things and really liked what was going on there. I thought that was the best place for me."

Garretson said it was a combination of the coaches, the facilities and the community that helped shape his decision.

"It's a real college town and that's one of the things I really liked about it," Garretson said. "I felt a lot of support from the students as well."

Garretson like the offense that Utah State runs, which is a wide-open system with multiple sets including shotgun, pistol, power and others. He will be sitting behind Chuckie Keeton for the next two years, so it would be an extreme shock if Garretson did not redshirt his freshman year.

Here are highlights from Garretson's senior season:
