Conference realignment: Big East loses Louisville to ACC

Andy Lyons

Louisville is the latest Big East team to defect from the league, they are now part of the ACC.

The Big East lost the Louisville Cardinals early Wednesday morning, as they were invited to become the latest ACC member. The thought was that it was Connecticut or Louisville, and some believed it would be UConn due to the New England market that I guess they pull in. The difference was that Louisville had a much larger athletic budget.

This is just another blow to an already weakened Big East, and everyone in the world knows what I am going to say next. That is that this is another reason for Boise State and San Diego State to reconsider their move. Louisville was the only team that was at least close to being on par with Boise State on the field. Cincinnati is in the neighborhood, but losing either has to be tough.

Again, we know nothing about the television deal, and that could still be the difference in all of this. As for competition it takes another big hit, and I do promise my breakdown of rankings and market size in the next day or two between the Big East and Mountain West.

Big East commissioner Mike Aresco made a blanket statement about the league's future:

"We will continue moving forward to fulfill that vision, which includes a strong national football conference and a strong and storied basketball conference."

Yup, that was expected to be heard from Aresco.

So, what would it take for Boise State and San Diego State to turn around? Sound off in the comments, because I really want to know. Is it only money the schools could be getting. Saying it is for the upgraded competition is a tired, and stale argument at this point.
