One of the early season premiere college basketball games could be thrown to the wayside. The San Diego St. Aztecs were to play the Syracuse Orange on the USS Midway which is a retired aircraft carrier and now a museum. The game is likely to be canceled due to a lack of financial support.

The San Diego Union-Tribune has multiple sources that the game could be cancelled:

"We're in discussions with the schools and we're optimistic we can find a solution," said Fox Sports spokesman Chris Bellitti, whose network has the broadcast rights to the game. "We still want to produce and televise the game on the Midway as planned."

Finances is one reason to why the game is in jeopardy as not all of the 4,000 tickets have been sold, but those tickets have not yet been released to the general public. The bigger issue is that Al Kidd who is the president of the San Diego Sports Commission and was a big proponent of getting this game played, recently left the organization. After that the fan fest, concert and gala were also all canceled.

Some other issues is that Fox Sports has not yet announced, at least publicly, any national sponsors for this game. As mentioned, the game is not sold out and tickets are about $1,000 apiece.

San Diego State has reserved the 14,000-seat Valley View Casino Center as a backup incase of inclement weather, so moving the game there is a possibility. However, would Syracuse want to travel cross-country for a non-conference game when they rarely leave New York for non-conference games.

It would be a shame if this game was lost, as some are predicting it to be one of the best non-conference games of the season. Plus, if it was canceled San Diego State would be playing 29 games instead of 30.
