San Diego St. Aztecs quarterback Ryan Katz had surgery this past Wednesday to surgically repair his broken ankle. Katz hurt his ankle when he was tackled in the teams 39-38 overtime win over Nevada a few weeks back. The injury will have Katz sidelined for the rest of his season, and ending his college playing career.
Adam Dingwell will be taking over the starting job for Katz, and he offers his condolences to Katz:
"That's a tough way to go out for him. I hope he recovers well," said Dingwell, who will command the Aztecs' offense for the remainder of the season. "It's always bad when you go down with an injury. It's a rough one, especially being a senior. You never want to see it happen like that.
"I think he's doing all right."
Before the injury, Katz was having a big year with 1,348 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. This is a big loss, but Dingwell was neck-and-neck with Katz to win the starting job, so there should not be much of a drop off, if any.
While this injury is a bad thing for Katz, this is tough to say, but going forward for next season this will help the Aztecs progress as a football team. Dingwell is very capable of leading San Diego State the rest of the way, and even possibly a conference title if they can get past Boise State on Nov. 3.
