Defensive coordinator George Barlow is taking over for the fired Mike Locksley on an interim basis, and begin a nation wide search once the season ends. Barlow has been at New Mexico since 2009 and he started out as the defensive backs coach, became the defensive coordinator going into this season and is now the interim head coach.

School president Paul Krebs met with Locksley after the loss to Sam Houston State, and presumably before word came out on the incident of a car registered to him, and said that he did not "see any good ending to this story."

Locksley's will receive his salary that he was expected to earn in 2011 and then $150,000 for the following two years.  Krebs also said that no state money will go toward Locksley's buyout.

The Barlow era kicks off against a winnable game against rival New Mexico State.
