SI's Stewart Mandel: "Look for the Aztecs to knock off TCU or Boise State when those teams visit San Diego."
Mandel also predicts the Aztecs will finish the season at 10-2 under first year coach Rocky Long.

He's not alone
In the print edition this week, another SI writer predicted BSU would finish 11-1…with that lone loss coming somewhere in conference play.
Not necessarily agreeing with him, mind you — just passing it along in a related discussion.

Cory McCartney is predicting 11-1 on the site - but an unblemished conference records
Wondering if you have that confused. I haven’t bothered with the print edition in ages, however.
I'd rather be surfing.

Agree
Aztecs have the chance to do so. They just need to find some WR’s

San Diego may have a good offense but...
as the saying goes, Defense wins Championships (see TCU). Does San Diego have the defense to slow down the Boise offense? That is not a rhetorical question. I honestly know nothing about San Diego’s Defense so I don’t know how good they will be. I do know from a fan stand point that Bronco Nation is looking forward to invading San Diego and helping the team stick it to the Whiner-in-Chief AKA Rocky Long. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 15,000 BSU fans down there. He will find out that Boise doesn’t care what color the grass is or the uniforms.

He'll probably whine about all the blue in the stands
Fans will probably get banned from wearing blue, when Bronco WRs go up for a rainbow from Kellen the CB has a hard time seeing them!

the Aztec defense
Is not great but not terrible. Expect shootouts with SDSU.

That could be fun!
Nevada is the only conference mate that could compete consistently with BSU in a shootout. They made for some exciting games. One was a quadruple overtime game in 2007 (69-67). This year, we may see a shootout with Air Force as well. As much as we have enjoyed the conference blowouts over the years, close, hard-fought games would be a nice change, assuming BSU wins them of course :)

that quad OT game was epic
even though it ended in a loss its still one of my favorite football games I’ve ever seen.
Does San Diego have the defense to slow down the Boise offense?
In a word: “No.”
But then that is not the point. The 3-3-5 is a high risk, high reward type of scheme so I don’t think Rocky is going to try to “slow” Boise. I think he is going to ratchet up the blitzes and try stop it completely…which will fail spectacularly in many cases.
Has Kellen Moore ever faced a 3-3-5 scheme before?
Not sure if he has
I am confident in saying that SDSU’s offense can keep pace with Boise State.
The SDSU defense will have to make a few stops (as would Boise) but I would say Boise’s defense is much better and will be the difference in that game.

If you can get to Kellen, you can rattle him
he’s not easy to sack, but if you rush him into some throws you can equalize the passing game fairly effectively. That was a big key to the Boise Nevada game last year, I thought.
I wouldn't be too shocked if the Aztecs won the MWC
Granted it’s definitely not my pick, but it is a possibility. SDSU has both TCU and Boise at home and the only tough road game is going to be against Air Force. San Diego State’s offense can keep pace with pretty much anyone in the league and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win a couple of shootouts down in San Diego.

If BSU lost to someone (in MWC play) and SDSU beat one of the two schools (TCU/BSU), you could potentially end up
with another scenario as with last years WAC, with three co-champions. I have no idea (nor do I honestly care) what they MWC tie breaking rules are, but most casual CFB fans would look at say a 10-2 TCU (with say a loss to BSU and Baylor), and 11-1 BSU, and a say a 10-2 or 9-3 Air Force (with only a conference loss to TCU but two OOC losses), as a weird result if the three schools were MWC “co-champions.” I also suspect it wouldn’t affect TCU’s or BSU’s final rank or bowl prospects, the really good question is would it raise SDSU’s?

I would be
The Aztecs have too many choke jobs and/or fluky plays in their recent history so I always cautiously optimistic .
It wouldn’t surprise me to see SDSU beat Boise and TCU and then lose their final conference game to UNLV in the 4th quarter…on a returned fumbled snap in the “victory formation”
I lol'd at this
