I can't quite wrap my head around it
What is the best case scenario for the MWC if expansion 2.0 happens?
Best case Kansas and Kansas State doesnt go Big East and we get them.
by WolfpackNev on Aug 11, 2011 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions
The best case is the MWC doesn't get raided
by a reconstituted Big12. You don’t want to know the worse case. Kansas is going to have offers, KS not so much.
What MWC teams would get an invite?
Air Force seems like the only obvious candidate.
SDSU officials have hinted about the Big 12 too. If the Big 12 decides to head west, then every MWC school in in play.
Those would probably be the choices
With AF going first. Just depends on how many they need, one two or all three. The more likely outcome is they just play with nine and let TAMU go on it’s way. However you are right, if they head west, any and all are in play.

If they do want to to get back to 12
I would think they would also take a good look at BYU and/or some C-USA schools like Houston, Memphis, and UCF.
You don’t think A&M leaving would spur additional defection?
No
The only school who has real options is Oklahoma and they have already cast their lot in with the devil, I mean the Horns. They would have to have a real change of heart and then all hell would break loose. Otherwise I see no need for the Big12 to get to any number other than eight, none of them seem to want back to twelve.

Been rumored around here...
That BYU TCU and Houston will be invited to get back to 12 with the Oklahoma schools moving to the North with a rivalry game for TX/OU…per ESPN radio Austin assuming the Big Ten/PAC12 don’t come for OU/Mizzou.

I have a hard time seeing TCU getting an invite
Houston I can see, they are highly underrated in expansion talks. Still none of this happens unless OU leaves, the Big12 will just exist with nine (they have already said so). In fact I don’t see anything killing the Big12 except for Texas leaving (which I doubt).

Losing A&M and Nebraska hurts...
TCU and BYU will help offset that some and Houston helps them keep some of the Houston market that will split now that both A&M and LSU are in the SEC.

What about other Big 12 schools?
Do you think A&M leaving will cause a domino effect or just an “isolated incident”?
like I said...
this all depends on the other 3 conferences (B1G/SEC/PAC)
The Pac10 said expanding to 16 wasn’t worth it without Texas but its in Texas’ best interest to have a conference where they could have their own network.
SEC could go after OU or Mizzou from the Big 12 but grabbing a 14th on the East coast like Florida St would be most likely.
The Big Ten going after Mizzou would be the most interesting…
Ironically the only major conference left that Texas could go to would be the SEC…
But their is always the nuclear option of Texas and Notre Dame starting the long rumored Super League…
If Texas A&M was to leave, Dodds said the Big 12 might seek to bring in another school. Dodds also said if there was not sentiment to hold the Big 12 together by the remaining members that Texas and possibly Notre Dame could join forces to create a new conference.
I think Chip Brown is smoking something
There is no way ND joins a conference at this point and certainly not one with Texas. There are just way too many problems in the way for that to happen. The first is ND has already said they wouldn’t join a conference unless forced to by a post season requirement. Those two could not live together.
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions
ND's AD is also the one who said what I wrote
I know a few Irish heavy hitters (LA is home to the second largest ND alumni club in the nation), and they would ride the ND’s AD out of SB tared, feather and on a rail. If it was Dodd then I apologize to Chip and say Deloss is smoking something instead. Question, what does ND get out of joining a conference with Texas that they don’t already have?
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions
it may just be...
a national independent scheduling agreement for football and a conference for all other sports…just a thought
What do you mean by "agreement"?
Doesn’t ND already nationally schedule? I mean teams from all over the country already line up to play them on their terms. Do I have that wrong? As for another place for their other sports, they play in the Big East. Not a bad situation for them, good teams and not too far away.

You are assuming Texas cares.
they don’t. I think their ego is large enough to cover any losses except for Oklahoma. Houston and TCU were never wanted in the first place, Texas has them covered. I can see BYU, but only if they need teams to get to eight members.
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions
A&M had a large chuck of money from the Big 12...
no way the rest of the conference allows that to go to Texas and OU, so if they could split A&M’s share and the CCG money between BYU/TCU/Houston then it may be worth it since noone else would lose much if any money
I think Texas and OU could do something like that
After all, they adjusted the revenue sharing amounts between the members within the last few months. Everyone not named Texas, OU or TAMU is getting a little bit more. If they could do it then to keep the peace, they could do so again.
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Yep Texas and OU are getting less % in the conference
although their piece of the pie has increased…they just got to take their 3rd party rights which haven’t been used EVER despite both Texas and OU wanting do use them for years…
Losing A&M isn’t as bad as losing Nebraska but worse than Colorado.
Houston partially offsets A&M’s hold over that market.
TCU strength in football and baseball offsets A&M.
BYU basketball would offset A&M’s basketball.
The SLC market help make up from the loss of Colorado.
And the national Mormon fanbase helps offset the loss of Nebraska’s national following.
In the end, I don’t see the Big 12 being that bad off, yes losing Nebraska’s strength in football is hard to make up but the rest of it is debatable. I’m not gonna say its better than the big 3 but its still better than the Big East and ACC…
All and all I’m still hoping for Texas, Tech, OU, and Okie St go to the PAC16…
You know I wouldn't put it past Larry Scott
to work something out with the LHN to land Texas. Don’t know how but I wouldn’t put it past him.
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions
agree...
maybe they put OU/OSU/Tech in their own regional network and let UT keep its own but I wonder how they’d pick what programming to put on the LHN and what to put on the national PAC12 one…
More like OU/OSU in one
And Texas/TT in another. Texas would have to give up some money to the total pot and a little bit more to TT, but the trade is they get to keep their network. It the control issue that would be a problem, not the money. Some give on both parts, not too sure who would have the most trouble selling it???
by ev on Aug 11, 2011 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree with both comments
If MWC somehow can get K-State and Kansas then there is a nice 12-team football league, but a clunky 11-team hoops league. Perhaps grab Seattle or sweet talk Denver as a non-football member.
In all likely hood best case is MWC does not get raided. Two teams I could see them adding if K-State, Kansas and Missouri go to Big East and the Big 12 is gone would be to grab Texas Tech and see if UTEP will join to have a decent travel partner.

Just spitballing here
But if Kansas & K-State leave for the MWC, then the Big 12 is probably history and Texas is looking at independence.
What if the MWC made a deal with Texas similar to what BYU had in place with the WAC? Add Texas as the 12th non-football member with agreements that some MWC schools will play them in football every year to fill out their schedule.
not saying independence is impossible...
but its highly unlikely, noone in our admin has ever given any indication that we’d even consider it if we can keep Tech, OU, Okie St, K St, and KU then we have a conference since Baylor and Iowa St have no other options.
If A&M leaves the possible new Big 12...
South- Texas, Houston, Baylor, TCU, Tech, and BYU
North- OU, Okie St, Kansas, K St, Mizzou, and Iowa St
Protected Rivalries- TX/OU, Tech/Okie St
Tsk, tsk
Well isn’t TCU a little jezebel. How many conferences would that be in the last decade? :-?
That would mean the Big East is back to square one and probably looking towards an already depleted C-USA…which will start looking at the WAC/SunBelt.
And hopefully the MWC is looking at UTEP plus ???
Technically...
they may never officially join the Big East ;)
I’ve always said that I’d prefer UTEP and Utah St (since I knew Houston wasn’t gonna hang around)
