Getting the UNLV head coaching for Dave Rice was his dream job, and the Rebels got a bargain because of this. The state of Nevada is having budget issues which in turn effects UNLV, so the athletic department most likely had to scale back from what former head coach Lon Kruger was making.
Rice's three-year deal is for $400,000 and helps the school in a few ways: One is financial relief and the other was to pay their assistants Stacey Augmon, Heath Schroyer and Justin Hutson who combined will make $537,000. Overall the combined salaries of the four coaches comes in at $937,000 which is less overall then what former UNLV head coach Lon Kruger made who was making $1.1 million per year.
Compared to other Mountain West coaches Rice is underpaid:
Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt will make a similar base salary to Rice but can earn as much as $645,000 a year with incentives.
Colorado State coach Tim Miles signed an extension this offseason that bumps his salary for next season to $585,000 and increases it again to $750,000 the next four years.
New Mexico coach Steve Alford signed an extension in 2010 that boosted his total compensation to $1,149,200 last season
Not that anyone should be feeling sorry that Rice is only making $400,000 per year, because for a first-year head coach that is an above average salary. UNLV went with the approach of surrounding Rice with quality assistants to make sure the hoops program keeps rolling along as it has been when under Lon Kruger.
