2011 Mountain West Basketball Awards: Jimmer Fredette Is Named Player Of The Year
The Mountain Basketball awards were handed out today, and to no surprise BYU's Jimmer Fredette was the named the leagues Player of the Year, while BYU head coach Dave Rose and San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher shared MWC Coach of the Year honors. BYU's Jackson Emery was named the leagues Defensive Player of the Year. New Mexico's Drew Gordon was selected as the Newcomer of the Year, New Mexico's Kendall Williams was chosen as the Freshman of the Year and Colorado State's Pierce Hornung received the Sixth Man of the Year award.
Wyoming was the only two schools to not land anyone on the first-, second- or third-team selections. They did put Desmar Jackson and Amath M'Baye received honorable mention consideration.

Remind me again
How the DPOY is not on the 1st team? Not only did he outplay Gay both games head to head he also averaged more points (12.7 to 11.7), rebounds (3.5 to 2), and steals (2.8 to 1.1) per game, and is on the team who beat the 1st teamer twice. In fact the only major stat of the standard 4 that Gay is beating Emery is in assists per game (3.4 to 2.6). It’s almost comical that a guy who is getting blown out in 3 of the 4 stats still takes 1st team over the guy who is clearly the better all around player. Not sure how that makes sense…
that does not make sense
thanks for pointing that out.

I'm so glad your GUARD out rebounded ours. Congrats.
Not to mention that your analysis considers the immense totality of 4 categories. We should just put all 68 teams in the tournament and seeded by how many points per game they score.
Not to mention Gay is the Point Guard so assists is really the only stat that matters… or maybe assist to turnover ratio which Gay leads the conference in. Of course it isn’t really fair to Emery that he has less assists because it’s tough to get touches away from his POY teammate.
Maybe it’s because he’s the leader of the team that is tied for the best record in the nation like Jimmer is the leader of BYU? Or maybe because Gay plays nearly every minute of every game? Or because Emery is a mere afterthought at best in light of the three ring circus sideshow Jimmer?

That 3 ring circus and his sidekick lulled your little girls to sleep twice this year
While the 4 stats are not the only stats to go by they are called the “standard 4” for a reason. Gays numbers are below Emerys. If you’d like we can add more? My guess is you’d find that Emery beats Gay in more than 3/4’s of the stats you pull (like 3p%, steals, fg%, ft%, blocks). Sorry Sam, your stats theory stands alone. My guess is it was out of sympathy. FYI, the assists to turn over ratio is hardly a victory (2.81 to 2.61). But if those 2 stats are the only ones for selecting the first team PG then “We should just put all 68 teams in the tournament and seeded by how many points per game they score.”
Shoot if all we did was go by assists (your choice) then Gay would be our 10th selection for PG averaging 3.4 to Hank Thorns 7.0 and nine others in between. Someone call the MWC they made a mistake!!!!!
Jimmer crushed us last game. 25 points on 23 attempts.
and yeah, It was out of sympathy. That’s why they give out awards these days. Too bad the Lobos have no sympathy for throttling the Cougars so the Golden Calf won’t have another shot at us.

Again, way to keep it relevant
So, what you’re saying is that when a player puts up nearly 70 points on a team in only 2 games (averaging just under 1 point per minute played) that’s not dominating? Being an LA native I know SDSU is the party school for CA, I’m going to chalk up your idiocy to a night of puff and booze. Clearly you are still on something.

Good one.
You’re about as original as everyone else in LA.

SDSU will just beat BYU in the tourney final if BYU can make it past New Mexico.
You got the wrong TV, silly head
The team we've beaten like 5 straight games?
ok.

Hey
The games this season have been close, even with UNLV playing at its lowest point. The team is really playing much better than it was when it played SDSU both times this season and the Rebels are playing on their home court again. I think the Aztecs should be on serious upset alert.

As much as I hate admitting it
UNLV is the favorite nearly every year for this very reason. They always finish the season strong and they carry that into the tourney. Hard to not peg UNLV as the tourney fav.
God Damn
Freshman of the year with Kawhi Leonard and Jimmer leaving to the NBA. The Lobos’ future looks bright. I’m kidding; I just had to say something.
