Conference Expansion: Big East To Invite San Diego State, Boise State As Football-Only Members On Wednesday, According To Report

Looks like the report last night saying that it was just a matter of time before the Big East was going to add Houston, SMU, Central Florida for all sports and Boise State and San Diego State as football-only members is moving forward with an announcement expected to be made on Wednesday. This is all according to CBS Sports college football writer Brett McMurphy:

Screen_shot_2011-12-06_at_10

I have said all along that I will not believe it until I see it, but McMurphy is rarely wrong on his reports. Anyways it was really just a matter of time before this move was going to happen. The move will give Boise State and San Diego State more money from the Big East's new television deal.

There is no word on Air Force as of yet and if they are to join the Big East they would be following suit after the 2013 and possibly with the Navy.

With San Diego State and Boise State on their way out the Mountain West will be down to eight teams for football and seven for basketball, so the league must decide to fully combine with Conference USA or add new members to shore up the league numbers.

Well ....

That sucks.

Maybe it is time for the all-out MWCUSA merger. Or the merger + more teams (to get to 18 or 20).

Bad all around.

Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.

Good job BSU/SDSU...

but I think this move has actually moved everyone in the equation into irrelevance. It has destroyed a strong MWC football presence, and it has taken out a very good bball team. BSU was actually looking like an up and comer in bball.

So, this move has relegated those two schools to gym leagues and a lower chance of going to the big dance. MWC was sitting around 3 or 4 in overall strength of bball conference. Well… the loss of those two schools will still leave the remaining teams in the MWC in a better position than what SDSU and BSU are facing. UNLV and UNM will be the backbone, and Wyo and CSU both look to be up and coming.

But still, this move has fractured what was once a very solid league in both football and bball. I think if we had all stuck together, the potential for growth was going to be sky high. Now everyone has been weakened, and with all the talk about AQs going away, BSU and SDSU may make more money on football TV rights, but once everything comes out I doubt they will come ahead… with the same chance at getting into a big bowl as they have now (in fact, there likely will be a lesser chance of that in the configuration they are walking into).

Disagree about BSU Basketball

Just because they leave the MWC doesn’t mean they won’t still be an up and comer. Coach Rice is from Gonazaga, he’d continue to thrive in a “gym” conference similar to the WCC like the Big West. Heck, we were up and coming last year too, in the WAC… Just couldn’t finish off a good Utah State squad in regular season or conf championship

Well..

that’s just my gut feeling about this. Time will tell if my dire predictions about this particular move come true. While you guys dislike the MWC for the TV contract and how you view Craig… enjoy being in a conference which will see all the power and decisions being made in the eastern portion with a conference commish who arguably has done worse than Craig.

Agree with all the football thoughts, but

MWC as country’s third or fourth best basketball league? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Obviously it’s a strong league as currently constructed, but every BCS conference, save maybe the PAC-12 is still better.

last year’s overall rankings and this years Sagarin rankings for that generalization.

These problems all stemmed from a MWC decision several years ago

Not adding BSU sooner. BSU lobbied to get in but MWC chose TCU. Bad choice? Maybe not but MWC should have expanded even more. If BSU was a member for the past 5 years or so the MWC would have been SOLID. Can you imagine the Utah vs. BSU games the season Utah went to the BCS? Or the TCU vs. BSU games over the past few years? Hindsight is always 20/20 but if they had brought BSU into the conference when they brought TCU in we wouldn’t be having this conversation, we’d be getting an AQ bid.

BSUblu got it right. At the time other conferences starting thinking about getting a championship game to equal the strength of the SEC and ACC the MW should have already been moving. A conference with Utah, BYU, TCU and BSU, + maybe an AF thrown in for good measure, could have been something. If the MW would have been at 12 then, the winner of a championship game actually would have had a chance at AQ and all of the perks. Now CT will react, poorly and slowly as usual, and back fill the loss of three quality teams with chumps. C-USA will do the same and the talent level will be dropped a few more notches. If any other teams should get good and leave…

by jitmon on Dec 6, 2011 12:04 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe...

but in how many of those years, with the increased competition, would Utah and BSU have gone to those BCS games? I think the chances of one of those teams getting upset in a stronger MWC would have been much larger.

Also, while it would have been stronger, you really cannot argue that Utah would not have been poached away by the PAC. The TV contract with the MWC would not be all that much larger than we have today, and the money and prestige of the PAC would have lured them away. When that happened, do you also really see BYU sticking around with Utah leaving? TCU would have left as well when the Big 12 came knocking, as that has been their dream destination since 1996 when the SWC broke up.

No matter what steps Craig could have taken 6 years ago, our position would be about the same as we see it now. Sure, being a bit more active than reactive might have put the MWC in a slightly better financial situation, but the relatively small moves he could have made during that time would have been overshadowed by the continental movements of the other major 6 conferences and their changes. The BE would still be in its same situation and looking out west, except they would just raid the MWC like the ACC raided them. In the AQ world we live in now, they would have succeeded just as well.

probably so

But had the MWC earned BCS status the money from tv would have gone up and who knows. I agree with the Pac-12 calling and now seeing what their tv deal is going to be, no team would turn that down.

But how...

would the MWC have gotten an AQ bid during the last cycle… in 2008? Utah had been there once, BSU had been there once, and Wyoming/UNLV/SDSU were sucking eggs back then. I don’t think the numbers would have worked out either.

I agree coach Rice

has already proven he can obtain good athletes where ever they maybe (Australia, Lithuania) so the conference doesn’t make the team the team makes the conference. and coach rice is the man! aussie aussie!!! OI! OI!! OI!
