Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Kellen Moore Becomes College Football's Biggest Story

LAS VEGAS — For the last time in his career, Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore leads his Broncos to victory. The average sized quarterback threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns in a 56-24 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl for win #50.

Winning 50 games has never happened before. It might just be the college football equivalent to baseball's Cy Young's record for wins with 511. Very few college quarterbacks end their career with 40 wins.

Kellen Moore came into Boise State as a freshman in 2008 after the Broncos shocked the nation and defeated Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. He then took America's cute little upset and turned it into a national powerhouse. Thanks to Kellen, Boise State is one Fiesta Bowl richer and will join the Big East conference in 2013.

This was a guy with his average size, goofy look and pads that make him look fat. If anything, we were witnessing the long lost cousin of Eli Manning.

To even get close to Kellen Moore's win total, one would have to join a completely stable and dominating program that contends for the National Championship on a annual bases, start from very beginning as a freshman, and dominate the competition 94 percent of the time. Kellen Moore is 50-3 and it can be argued that those three losses weren't his fault. Two of them came from a botched kick from his kicker.

Kellen Moore's career can be defined by three things. The first would be his 50 wins, which is nearly impossible to accomplish in a four year span.

The second would be the importance of UNLV's Sam Boyd Stadium in Moore's legendary career. He's won two Vegas Bowl games against Utah and Arizona State of the Pac-12. His record breaking 46th win and his 50th win came in the same season and in the same stadium.

The third is his rivalry with TCU, the other BCS buster. Their could only be one BCS buster and the two teams battled it out in three amazing games. The Horn Frogs came out on top in the Poinsettia Bowl in 2008 with a last minute touchdown. Kellen Moore got revenge in the Fiesta Bowl the next season. The rubber match came this season when the two teams were in the same conference. A botched kick cost Boise State a chance at a BCS Bowl and the Mountain West title.

This story far exceeds anything else in college football, including the SEC rematch for the BCS Title. College football may never witness another 50 game winner for a long time. Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler said that it may take 100 years until another college quarterback wins 50 games.

If the Mountain West and CUSA do have a merger, if a dominant team emerges that has Hawaii in their division then they will have a chance for even more. Two fourteen game seasons: 12 + Championship game + Bowl Game, Two fifteen game seasons (12 + Hawaii + Championship Game + Bowl Game). That’s a potential fifty eight wins, so if Hawaii stays in a conference that has a conference championship game the possibility will always be there.

Moore

Was five points away from an undefeated career and three BCS bowl games.

Erm

He was five points away from an undefeated regular season. That would definitely have have given them another BCS game (this season), but it’s not clear Boise would have jumped TCU last year even if undefeated, and given how the other automatic bids and at-large candidates shook out it’s unlike Boise would have earned an at-large (the at-large spots having been filled by Stanford and TCU automatically, the Sugar was pretty much a lock to take another SEC team to replace Auburn, and a top-ten Ohio State was available; possibly they get in if they finish #4 and so kick Stanford out of the 3/4 rule automatic spot, but it’s not likely given who else was available).
